emperor there seems to be one or more version of L around, nicW and Erik both said there scanners work for 4x 6x 8x on L then later said this not the case, So Im thinking there are two L's the one on BenQ sites B7L9 and beta B7l9 that Erik and NicW were sent under NDA to test with.

Ok here is some clearer information about the mentioned firmware:

- B7L9 (DVDInfo Pro - PI/PO faster scanning speed)
- B7I9 (BenQ TE/FE tool support)

The above firmware versions are beta version. They are not an official firmware. The upcoming [B7M9] will include

- Faster PI/PO scanning speed (suitable for CD-DVD Speed v3.40 or newer & DVDInfo Pro v3.30 or newer)
- Media TE/FE signal test (BenQ tool)
- Improve the compatibility for DVD-R/RW media

Yes I have found this out too, we seem to be crossing over each other on finding outs. Anyway next week with luck B7M9 will release and all will be sweet for scans on 1620

Probably with even newer firmware version than B7M9

BenQ was and always will be crap. They first have to fix -R issues and then move to higher DL speed.

I think the BenQ DW1620 has more potential then almost any other competing drive. BenQ has MUCH better firmware support then NEC or even Pioneer, and they are offering more features then both as well. The writing quality is improving at a phenominal rate, and I think will meet NEC and Pioneer's burn quality standard in the very near future.

I used to feel the same way about BenQ though, I had no faith in them whatsoever... but then someone dropped the DW1620 in my lap, and I realized how wrong I was!!

I always had faith and b7k9 was quite reassuring. If this drive recieved as much unofficial support as nec or pio drives it might be even more entising to some, not that it needs much since benq is doing quite nicely with official support. all that is needed now is some rpc1 firmware and riplock. surely someone might be willing if not benq, perhaps even some kind of utility to make it rpc1

Yes it would be nice to have some control over what speeds can be burned on what media.
