Is this currently the best firmware to use with the NEC3500...in terms of compatibility and quality???

I believe so, you can expect same performance as 2.07 we tested

What liggy reports its false, please look at thispage, 207 which has same writing strategies as 227 doesn't support Ritek D01 at 4X, but at 1X ->Writing not possible

You're right : "Scorpiosoft" try a Ritek DL with 2.27 and it does not work at all...
This is bad news : for Ritek DL support and for Liggy's buggy program

That is correct, not booktype setting is allowed for +RW, but...I burned a disc with Nero 6.3.1.25 and the burned disc had DVD-ROM booktype, which makes me think that it set automatically, please also test this and report...

In Nero 6.3.1.25 you've got to watch "Burner menu" Options>> and set booktype to 'current drive setting' if you want to keep control of what Nero is doing...

I got a 3500A earlier this week and stuffed the DB 2.F8 firmware onto it, which supports SL booktype changes. Then I used WinBType to change the booktype to DVD-ROM for DVD+R SL discs and burned a DVD+RW using Nero 6.xxx .. The disc came out as DVD+RW.. Is the booktype setting only for DVD+R or should it work for DVD+RW also? When is the booktype of the disc actually changed? when the disc is closed (i.e. no more sessions can be burned) ? or can it be changed independently of burning actual contents to the disc? (note that i'm talking about disc booktype here, not the drive booktype setting)..

hope to get a reply, since i'm all new to this booktype stuff...

After changing the default booktype, with NEC you must format slowly and totaly the DVD+RW to change booktype in the fact.

With Liteon, there's an utility for changing booktype when you want on a DVD+RW without formatting

I have burned a +RW drive with the new firmware, but so fare no success for a DVD-Rom booktype...

Probably your result had to do with kogos conclusion.

To my mind it will be a waste of time, it's not so useful, since you change booktype only a very few times on a burner...

@pierrearonnax : you must update to Nero Burning ROM 6.3.1.25 first to have the same screenshot...

i have to agree with pierre.. I tried doing a full format of a DVD+RW using DVDInfoPro, but the disc was still reported as being a DVD+RW and not a DVD-ROM media.. So the full format did not seem to work for me...

@ItalianJob: maybe you dont change booktype of the burner for specific media very often, but we are talking about changing booktype of the media here, not the drive...

Please, try something else than DVDInfopro for the complete format and report the result here...

I know, but it's the burner booktype that you set with DVDInfoPro... Then your burner change the booktype of the next media you insert... Nevermind, it's not so important...

That's the whole point, I HAVE 6.3.1.25!
Anyhow, when I insert a DVD+R, the booktype section in Nero suddenly appears…

I have chanced de default booktype for +R and +R9 to -ROM with the WinBType utility, and then (for the first time) I burned a DVD+R with CloneDVD.
I was pleased to find out that, indeed, the booktype was automatically set to DVD-ROM, and that my stand-alone DVD player reads the DVD!

Back to the +RW issue:
So far, there is no utility where I can set the default burner booktype for +RW to -ROM, and the media booktype for +RW remains +RW, whatever burning tool I use, and however I erase the +RW.

Try to uninstall Neor 6.3.1.25 (including INCD if applicable) and Intel Acceleration software (if applicable).
Then purge the Nero installation with a piece of software @ nero.com (a cleaner).

Reboot and reinstall Nero 6.3.1.25 (package 1 only).

Unfortunately it didn't made any difference.
When I have a +R (or no disk at all) in my burner, the booktype section in Nero is visible, but the moment I insert a +RW, it disappears...

I guess, I'll just have to wait for a new version of WinBType or DVDInfoPro with a +RW tab, so I can set the default booktype for the burner, not only the media.

For the moment, I'm happy that my stand-alone dvd player plays my +R. Hopefully it will play my +RW in the future.

Sorry for the consfution, the pic with the bitsetting drop down menu was only for DVD+R format NOT DVD+RW...with DVD+RW no drop down box appears but the burned disc (DAO/Closed) seems to had DVD-ROM booktype

Ok, newbie here. I just upgraded from an HP 200i to an ND-3500a. Unit shipped with v2.17 firmware, does this support sl bitsetting or must I upgrade to 2.27? I've just downloaded NECWinFlash.exe (gui version, 1.02), should I be able to see book settings here or in Nero 6.6.0.1 under burning properties? I don't see it in Nero under disk info, at least not for that version, and dvdbitsetting does not recognize or read from this drive. (it does recognize the disks and their settings)

If I need to upgrade to 2.27, what is the safest way to back up 2.17 before upgrading in case I need to roll back? Also, the 227.rar file that was referred to, is that supported by NEC or do I void my warrantee by installing it (I'm assuming that is the one that I need to install)

This drive is awesome, I've burned half a dozen different types of disks and all of them work with every dvd player I've tried (not one coaster) except my ancient Creative DVD2240E, which requires dvd-rom book setting (default for DVD+R with the HP DVD200i). To be honest if anyone has an idea how to upgrade the creative drive to recognize dvd+R book setting, I wouldn't bother with bitsetting.
