Plextor Europe delays shipment of the PX-716 for quality issues
Posted by Jan Willem on 03 November 2004 - 17:18 - Source: Heise.de

Pac used our news submit to tell us that Plextor Europe has delayed shipment for the PX-716 because the company considers the current state of the drive to be not of the quality that Plextor customers expect. Heise reports that the problems are mainly when writing at high speeds.

In a phonecall with the Marketing Manager of Plextor Europe we were told that an average user of the drive would likely not even notice the problems but as many Plextor owners are above average users the company has chosen to delay the drive. The problems are likely not to be solved with a firmware update only and likely require hardware modifications.

Unfortunately for Plextor, a small amount of drives was already launched in the United States due obligations to stores and some users who get their hands on one of these drives reported on our forums that the quality of the drive was on many cases far from expected. Current owners of these drives can be assured that Plextor will take care of their problems and solve them.

I bought one at Best Buy and it didn't work. It wouldn't recognize a single disc, burnt, pressed, cd, dvd, nothing. Don't bother with trash. Plextor has taken too long to get this drive to market and those that are available don't work. This is a common problem with the PX-716a.

Hello !

The last post in this thread is dated from November the 11th ...

Is there anything new about the PX-716A drive somewhere else on CDRinfo ?

In Europe we are waiting for the drive to be in the shops at mid december. I saw it for sale i a shop in Germany for 145 € but I don't know it's TLA# NUMBER.
Do you know if we can trust the number TLA#0101 to be sure tu buy a drive with the hardware revision on it.
One problem is that this TLA# is printed on the sticker directly on the drive and not outside on the box. So how manage this problem: ask for opening the box ? ?

Anyway before buying one I am waiting for the first review on CDRinfo and especially for the issues about the "Autostrategy" technology.
Does anybody know if "Autostategy" is already discussed somewhere ?

Thanks for reply and have a nice day ...

What in the world is Plextor doing??? They've removed the date available from their website. And it seems as though no one knows anything at all!!! Even the RESELLERS can't tell you anything.

Well, I just ordered my PX-716A drive from Buy.com but I should add that it's on "Back-Order" though. I'll probably get the drive before CDRInfo does the REVIEW! I've used Plextor drives for sooo long and have only had a problems with one drive the Plextor 48x24x48A and Plextor sent me a Plextor Premium 52x32x52x drive in it's place. However, the Plextor 24x drive is still kicking.

PC Connection is advertising the PX-716A for $70 after a $50 rebate and a $30 rebate.
They don't have it in stock though.
