Hi all,

New to this forum. I am about to buy a DVD-burner in the next week but I am a bit unsure which one to get.

Is the Pioneer 108 better than the Nec 3500? Is the Pioneer A08 better than the Nec 3500?

My main purpose would be backing up photos and copying DVD-movies.

Thanks in advance,

gmt

ps: sorry if I am nr. 1000 to ask these questions.

read these reviews:

NEC ND-3500a

Pioneer DVR-108

The only difference between 108 and A08 is the loudness. I would recommend the NEC. I bought this too and I'm very happy with it!

Take a look in the reviews to find out what it is more suitable for you. If you still need further assistance I would also say the NEC.

Thanks for your replies. From the review, I feel that the Pioneer is the "better" drive. But a gut feeling tells me to go with the NEC over the Pioneer. Also, the NEC seems to be easier to support with firmware updates (more available).

Is there any point in waiting for the new Plextor PX-716A? I have the 24/10 CD-RW
Burner and couldn't be happier.

I have a related question. How about OEM NEC? I mean it won't have the software bundle (and that's ok), but will it have that bitsetting utility? I can't seem to find the NEC's Driver/Sotware Download page for North America.

why should you pay extra money for nothing?

thanx for the link, but my concern was primarily with the fact that I can't find any reference to DVD-RW drives on NEC's North America site. It's like NEC doesn't make them at all! I would like an official site with all the latest patches+firmwares+utilities from NEC, just to have a peace of mind.

Has anyone found such a site? I mean there's got to be one (where does cdrinfo gets firmware/utils to mirror on this site?)

there are many sites. for example: herrie.org (which is currently unavailible), www.rpc1.org and some few others
you could download the same fw for nec bulk and retail version, if you mean this! Or do you mean something like THIS (official NEC Homepage)
What is your problem dude?
cdrinfo gets the fw directly from NEC, for example, they got nec 2.07 firmware, which is not out yet. Nec will release a new firmware 2.17 asap, will be "downloadable" from official NEC-site!

My problem is that it mentions twice in the URL that it's "de" (German), I can't find the North American version, since there must be differences, i.e. Region Code etc.
As well even for the German page, manual/software section only contains manuals, no utils (bitsetting or otherwise)

It's true, that it's German, but, the information is the same, isn't it? why should there be any differences? If the drive is availible in the USA, so buy it! It won't be a european version or something like this! the north american homepage is crap! they don't even have the nd-2500a listed!
and though it is a German homepage, the information is in English, right?

I know they have it here ($115CAD, pretty good price) but as I said Region Code is different between NA and Europe, which means I need firmware for my Region, and putting European release could screw things up with DVD playback. Unless firmware doesn't contain RC settings?

Actually I have a broader question. :) when do you set book-type? before burning, after? if after do you have to first burn tao then change book-type then close?

alright. as I already said. Region-free firmwares can be downloaded at www.rpc1.org! you can flash your drive with this firmware and then you're able to play/record dvds of all regions! fw contains rc settings!

booktype should be set before burning. but it might be, that you don't need booktyping! if you have a nearly new dvd-standalone player, you won't need it!

To give you an actual answer to your concern, NEC ONLY sells drives to retailers and manufacturers in the US so the only drive you will get in the US is OEM. NEC provides no support, warranty service, or firmware to OEM users and they have told me that they don't want to. If you get a drive in the US you will have to rely on your re-seller and EU sites for firmware. Otherwise it is a great drive.

Did the reviews say Pioneer burns higher quality DVDs than NEC?

And has better error correction ability, meaning reading poor discs better?

Struggling since 2500@100+ ^_^
