8X/16X Burners need DMA (Direct Memory Access) in order to work properly. In order to enable DMA under Win200/WinXP you need to go at:

- Desktop -> My Computer -> Right Click -> Properties -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary/Secondary IDE Channel -> Advanced Settings -> Transfer mode -> Select DMA if available!!!

Its suggested to have already installed the motherboard drivers for chipset, usually that way windows enable DMA automatically. VIA/AMD/ATI based motherboards are suggested to install the latest driver packs in order to over come possible problems!

Mission accomplished!

More Info as posted by member donziehm:

Two bugs exist in WIN XP that can affect DMA settings.

The first deals with how XP will turn off DMA after multiple time-outs or CRC Errors. This one usually occurs when your resumes from sleep mode more than 6times. It happened to me and the best solution is to prevent your hard disk from going into sleep mode more than 6 times when you are logged on. You can do this by adjusting your power management settings accordingly. See KB817472 at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B817472 and
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/tech/storage/ide-dma.mspx .

The second is a registry hack that was posted by AngelDeath at the CDFreaks web site. It was the only thing that worked for me. See: http://club.cdfreaks.com/archive/topic/60218.html.

More Info as posted by member pierrearonnax:

I couldn't keep the DMA-mode, it kept switching back to PIO.
I've solved it by completely remove the Primary or Secondary IDE channel from the Device manager, and let Windows automatically reinstall the correct drivers. The problem was solved for me, then.

...but works with my Win2K Pro.
But then again... I don't install any MFG IDE drivers - I let Windows use MS ones, as I've had nothing but trouble otherwise.

The thing that works for me is completely remove Primary and Secondary IDE channel from Devïce Manager and then restart Pc. Than is DMA succesfully enabled for every drive in my Computer .

How do you mean ?

Go into:

Device Manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
Right-click Primary IDE Channel
Select "Uninstall"
Confirm to continue.
(Do not restart the computer at this stage)
Repeat for Secondary IDE Channel

Reboot the computer.

This forces Windows to reinstall the IDE drivers automatically.

Ok, I have this problem with my Plextor 716 SA (SATA) - not really with the drive but I think I`am doing something wrong. But I got this same problem with my second LG CD-RW - it burns (CD) max at 16x and DVD at 2-3x.

I got it, installed (physically) in SATA 1 socket. Please, tell mу what did I missed. In XP SP2 I disabled CD recording, I enabled DMA in Device Manager and my motherboard is fast (ASUS A8V Deluxe). But still the problem persists. I don`t know what to do!

Did you install the VIA 4in1 v4.55 after SP2?
Also VIA released a new set of RAID drivers but I'm not sure what those fixed...if anything at all.

Yes, I did.
About drivers I don't know.
My system is like yours (in your sig) in term of power.

What RAID has to do with DVD writer which is SATA? I installed it in black plug named SATA 1. I think the responsable controller is 'PROMISE'.

Oh, almost forgot - how do I see my SATA optical units in BIOS, I only get the IDE ones?

I just put together a A8V Deluxe for a friend of mine, so I'm pretty familiar with that board. Although he didn't buy an SATA DVD writer...with that said, here are some things to try.

1. If you just plugged the drive into SATA[1,2] then you're using the VIA controller. If you plugged into the SATA_RAID[1,2] then you're using the Promise controller. If you're really on the VIA controller then I would try the latest v4.10 from their website (www.viaarena.com). Boot into SafeMode and delete the controller and reboot.

2. If you're still having problems, then I'd try using the Promise port. Just make sure you have the latest Promise drivers. It's been around for a while so your ASUS CD probably already has the v1.00.1.37 on it. Boot into SafeMode and delete the controller and reboot.

Also to see the drives on the VIA or Promise controller, you need to press TAB or CTRL+F during bootup, respectively. More details are in your manual on pages 5-20 and 5-26.

Finally another thing to check off the list is make sure you have the latest BIOS version for your board. My friend is using the latest 1009 available here:

Well, I tried all of your tips and nothing resolved the 16x CD-writing problem. I tried using 3 types of CD`s and it`all the same. Mistery - even gone through reinstalling Windows (maybe some shell integration problem). Nothing.

Hi I was wondering if you can help me with my problem, err.. actually more concerns. I wanted to know how could I tell if my IDE port is an 80 way ribbon cable, how do i tell if it's not? and that the IDE port is at least UDMA 66 or above. I have a p4 1.7 256mb sdram and a 40gig HDD. I hope that helps.

And thanks to you all in advance.
