because they are customers of NEC and as such they can request changes to the firmware.

They are OEM customers, meaning they can request special features for their drives from NEC

I'm wondering, why everybody seems to look for hacked firmware and requests bitsetting here:
I have the old NEC3500 firmware, all burned media (DVD+R -R +RW -RW) are working perfectly in all tested DVD-players, I'd never burn a media certified 8x with 16x if NEC found out in long testing, that the quality of the DVD only allows 12x (remembering my first cheap CD's which lost data after 5 years).

Why the hell should anyone change the ND3500 fw?

i imagine the DVD+R SL Bitsetting is an important issue which NEC should have solved by releasing official support and "terminate" all those third party/hacking firmware stories
