but it isn't availible in stores by now... AND: It is the same drive as the ND-3500, isn't it? How can I change the firmware from NEC to TDK? Is it only installing the officiall TDK-FW or do I have to do something else?

I would go for the 1616...

is there any overwhelming reason why you do so? i seem to get the impression that the pioneer offers 'better' burns..am i mistaken?

also has johnneshahn mentioned the 1616 has yet to show up around here (canada). will the 3500 be comparable?

Both TDK 1616n and NEC 3500 are identical 100%, of course due to different firmware, some minor changes can be possible, so go ahead and grab a 3500 drive

how does one switch firmware between tdk and nec? is it as simple as downloading it from the vendor website and running the exe? is there a way to backup the existing firmware in case you wanted to roll-back to the original?
if its possible to flash a tdk firmware on the nec then it should be possible to obtain the same results as tdk. if this is true then the question remains nec vs. pioneer (which i suppose we wont get answered until the nec review is released).

thanks for your patience.

I have been told the Mad Dog firmware allows for DVD+R SL bitsetting. Does the TDK allow for this as well?

Alright, but is it as easy as downloading the fw and installing it? and what about a rollback?

Unfortunately not... with the official TDK firmware, you cannot change booktype for +R. On the other hand, +RW has DVD-ROM booktype by default, but you cannot change it at will

nice review. I was wondering if the reviewer could answer some questions

1. i need to change SL bitsetting whenever i want. Can i do this with official firmware and dvdinfopro?

2. why use kprobe scans? they are totally messed up. kprobe is still under development and most of the time, the scans cannot represent media quality

3. can tdk firmware be applied to nec3500 drive?
