Is there any 8X dvd burner which burns good quality dvd's and the firmware can make the burner burns at 12X for + and -, as I was thinking is there any sense buying a 16X now as there is no media and probably I will save couple of minutes .

Or maybe buying a 16x burner, but still using 8x or 12x media to burn at 8x or 12x speed.

There is only $12 difference between prices for 8x and 16X, so I might well get 16X as I wont be upgrading my burner next year. And both Pioneer and NEC are the same price so which one . I read the review of Pionner on this site looks like some of the issues were fixed .

The review of Pioneer says that it is The writing quality is very good with specific media as for me I usually buy Memorex or tdk media. Any anyone used these media with the pioneer. Most of the dvd players wont play DL disks ??

Good. Go ahead buying the burner and then enjoying it.

Pionner A08XL/108D or NEC 3500 are all very good.
For the DVD+R DL media, they will automatically be set to DVD-ROM:
Media Support - Book-type issue on +R DL media

+R DL media is tentatively-assigned the book-type field "1110h" which results in very low playback compatibility when the disc is placed into a legacy DVD player or legacy DVD-ROM drive. For "maximum compatibility" with legacy DVD players and DVD-ROM drives the book-type field should be set as "0000h" (DVD-ROM) when the disc is finalised/closed.

The DVR-108/DVR-A08XL's firmware will "automatically" set the default book-type field to "0000h" (DVD-ROM), thus eliminating the need for a separate "bit-setting utility" and further increasing the playback compatibility of +R DL discs when used with legacy DVD players and DVD-ROM drives..."

Detail please see here: BookType Setting

Ok, i just bought one of these drives today. Now I'm stumped i have 4x single layer media, but i thought it was possible to burn at higher speeds than the media sometimes..but nero won't let me go any higher than 4x. Is there any checkbox or setting i need to click? i can't find anything?

cheers.

Some people say Nec some say Pioneer. Isn't flashing drives firmware not safe also. I am thinking of going with Pioneer DVR-108 and when I have questions on updating its firmware I will post here. I never had NEC drives only Sony or Pioneer thats why I am kind of leary of nec.
