I had a running PC that could do cdr's and r/w's but it may have been another program that I installed that caused this problem but dont know which one. I have a TDK 16x10x40 and tried a TDK 48x16x48 to burn a cd but they lock up when burning a cd, I haven't tried doing a r/w lately but looks like another issue. Nothing else running in the background that is not needed is turned off. I uninstalled, reinstalled Nero and reinstall ASPI driver and it still locks up.

I'm gonna try using them in another PC when I can free one of them up.

The problem is the PC, now to figure out where the prob is and try to fix it. It must be something I installed.

What OS? What hardware in the system?

Try disabling DMA for your CDR/W drive. I've noticed several drives that seem to prefer to have this setting off. Lots of weird stuff happened with the setting on.

How much memory do you have?
...Do you have lots of free disk space?
What have you changed or installed recently?
If running WIN98SE run a defrag!

Amd 1 Gig
512meg ram
5 gig h/d
Win98SE with all the updates but using version IE 5.5xxx (had problems with ver 6 with service pack 1).

I did turn DMA off on the R/W but that didnt help.

I notice I have some type of networking problem now also. The error I get is " Cannnot create or replace "filename. The specified network resource or device is no longer available"

I dont remember what was the last s/w I installed before I had CD rom problems. I am going do defrag now and see where that gets me. I can transfer files to another hard drive on same pc but most files wont transfer over the network (at the moment anything less then 20k is fine to transfer).

Well I have done what was suggested and didnt help, looks like Im gonna have to reinstall everything at some point.

Something I did notice on another PC (amd 450 mhz, 200 meg ram 5 gig h/d) trying to burn cd's, somethimes it takes about 20 minutes to close a cd which is strange to me. But thats when it said it had read problems with file(s)just during a burn and I said yes to continue. Im using Nero 5.5.9.14.

I think the .17 was giving me problems on the giga pc. I ran scandisk, defrag, norton 2002 utilities and it still locks up. I wish I knew what I installed last. Any other suggestions of info needed? TIA

Is your HDD running on the same bus as your burner?...If nothing has changed inside the box.....disregard this!
Have you done any hardware upgrades of late?

YOu said you have a 5gig drive.....how much free space is on this drive?.....If mor than 80% full, try freeing up some space!

You have adequate secondary memory...that shouldnt be a problem!

Install "Ad-aware" and remove any possible spyware that may have been installed recently!
Have you changed CD-r media (brands) of late?
Update Firmware for burner!
Try different burning software eg: CloneCD or Blindwrite etc.!!

DMA was enabled (before this mess) and helped.
I freed up more space, gonna get bigger drive when I can.
CD rom on seconadary IDE, I learned why a few years back.
I dust out the pc's about every 6 months, dont look bad before I do. Both have good airflow.
I run Ad-aware every few weeks, systems ok.
Same cd-r brand, no problems with them.
Ran scandisk and defrag last week and still have problems.
I'm leary about updating firmware on componets, I cant afford to buy new one if I mess something up like that. I dont know how to do that.

I'll try image when I can.
I replaced supposely bad burner with new one, only hardware I had changed.

Do you have anything unique on your system like a Scanner, or Zip drive?

Any special software installed?

Try using the EndItAll program to make sure there is nothing running in the background during this process?

Do you have the latest drivers for your IDE controller?

Can you list what drivers you have loaded in your C:/windows/system/iosubsys directory.
