Would you recommend the NEC 3500A if it was my only DVD drive? Have the reading problems the older 25xx models had been fixed? Because I could also get a Pioneer DVR-108 if it hasn't.

The jury is still out on that question. The NEC has not been tested by any of the major sites. we simply do not know if the reading issues of the 25x0 series have been addressed. The Pioneer 108 has its own set of issues. See the cdrinfo review of it here
If you could wait a month or so, I'm sure many tests of the drive will be coming out. In the meantime, the Pioneer is a possibility. Good luck in your purchase; I personally wouldn't buy a drive that hadn't been tested anywhere, too much risk.

I can't wait to see some preliminary numbers of the NEC 3500. Maybe you can post some preliminary impressions even before the complete testing and review is completed.

New firmware is being prepared from NEC, so we will delay a bit our tests

Do you think the firmware would affect the reading performance to much degree? I'm sure the writing will be solid; a better reading performance would make it a more capable drive overall.

I would prefer to start the reading/writing tests with the latest firmware, i don't know what NEC would have already fixed

Probably a reasonable approach in the end. No point in retesting everything that wasn't perfect with the earlier firmware.

After the scan I saw about TDK 1616N, in this forum, I would go for the NEC 3500 or the TDK.
