People are guessing that BenQ will not release any firmware which can upgrade DW1610 to DW1620.

But for 1600, there will be such official firmware.

Consider to buy DW1600?

I really like the idea of backing up DVDs without compression. DL and bitsetting are my main concerns.

I can't find anyone that even sells a dw1600 either.. just the 1610 and very few with the 1620 on backorder..

Can't imagine that DW1600 is selling out. I thought it is only hard to get it in the begining (around early July when it is just released).

Well, maybe this is part of marketing policy, since DW1620 is already released.

Maybe you need to find other reseller who have DW1620 in stock.

Here is what BenQ replied, when asking if the DW1610A can read/write DVD+R DL media

"...DW1610 could support DL reading but not writing. However, DVDinfoPro and NeroInfo tool could get the wrong info - and they would release the new version to correct the bug.

Regarding the color box issue, sorry to confused users. " Disc formats Supported " for us means " reading format ", if the drive could write DL , we would highlight it at " Writing Speed item ".

For example, the " Write Speed " of DW1620 is " DVD+R Double Layer : 2.4x , DVD+R/RW : 16x4x , DVD-R/RW : 16x4x. CD-R/RW : 40x24x "

And the " Writing Speed " of DW1610 is " DVD+R/RW : 16x4x , DVD-R/RW : 16x4x. CD-R/RW : 40x24x "..."

BenQ said that the DW1610 shouldn't contain DVD+R DL media inside, if you find retail package with such media included, let me know!!!

Cool....Finally we get clearly that this drive can read DVD+R DL disc.

However, BenQ should update their web site to add the DVD+R DL to the supported "read" media.

Hey guys. I recently got a BENQ DW1610 with my new computer. I asked if it could do dual-layer writing, and they said yes. Afterwards, I did some reading here and on some other sites and found out that it really couldn't, those liars!

Anyways, it can play dual-layer DVDs, I've tried. But I guess it can't write them. Is there a firmware upgrade I can get that will allow me to do this?

Btw, is there also some other firmwares out there that will allow me to play DVDs encoded in another region? I don't wanna change the region-setting on the dvd-writer since their limited.

yep, 1610 can not write DVD+R DL disc.

And most of people don't think there will be any official firmware to let you upgrade DW1610 to 1620. But maybe there might be some hacked firmware can let you do that....well, who knows?

Darn. I sure hope that they'll release the upgrade.

Btw, I downloaded DVD Region+CSS, and it still doesnt work. Maybe thats not the problem with my DVD then. When I insert this disc, My Computer shows thats its a DVD-R in the icon, but the label says "CD Drive". When I try playing it, an error says "A disc with an unsuppoted format in drive E". It plays fine on my standalone dvd-player that is like 2-3 years old. Not sure why I can't play it on the dvd-writer on my computer.
