Yes once again, we dominate presenting the first Pioneer DVR-108 review.

As you will read the drive had slight better writing performance with 1.06 firmware than with 1.04, a newer firmware 1.08 supposed to come next week,

As always your comments/suggestions appreciated

Great review. But I had higher expectations of this drive since it's a Pioneer.

Yeap, we would like to have CAV writing strategy instead of Z-CLV

i think liteon 811 used in the reviews to kprobe the disks has some problems: it shows **always** increasing pi errors after half disk while plextools is always within the range.

Happyperoil, no its not always like that, we can say that the 811s and PX-712A are totally different drives, but from our reasearch showed that the used 811S can give peaks similar to the CATS results, the Plextor reports much lower error rates, while sometimes stops reading for unknown reasons. Sometimes both scans are very similar.

Unfortunaly there isn't a "safe" way to make "correct" scans, i simply refuse to follow the 4X CLV with 832S rule, I make my own rules from deep testing

I think it's funny that some people seem to think that scanning at 4x in an 832s is more accurate, or more safe, or that there is even ANYTHING better about it then any other way of scanning a disc. The reason people started scanning at 4x was because it was believed that scanning at 1x was best (which has been proven VERY false since then) and 4x was chosen because 1x was too slow for some people to justify scanning at... even though it was believed that 4x was less accurate. Since this decision by some people was made, it has been discovered that 1x and 4x testing are inaccurate, and even 8x isn't really "reliable", although sometimes isn't that far off.

The fact that people migrated to the 832s for scanning because it gave better results is so sad it's laughable!

I don't think there would be any Pioneer utilities at least from Pioneer, the silent software won't work with the DVR-108 only with the DVR-A08!

There is an un-official firmware, 16xALL for -R media, our test results will be posted shorlty!

As always, an excellent review.

I expected the write quality to be better from Pioneer. Seems like with the faster speed has not enhanced the write quality. I also hope that the 16x speed happens for more than just the very end of the write in future firmware upgrades. If this is what 16x burns are going to be like, than these burners will not be significantly faster than the last generation of writers.

I got my DVR-108 today. Found it by accident at the local store and couldn`t believe it, because there is not many of them on the market (In fact I didn`t expect it at all). The price I paid is about 150$.

So far I burned one multisession backup 3.6GB DVD-R, which took me about 10 minutes at 4x. It worked without any problems and the disk is readable in my 120S. Which DL media do you reccomend for DVD movies? Is Verbatim OK?

Why did you do the burn at 4x? Is that what the media was certified at?

Yeah, it was Verbatim 4x media. In the store where I bought it they have only 8x DVD+R which costs about double the price, and it was not really important to burn it at that speed. But I will try it in next few days just to see how much time it takes.

BTW firmware revision of the drive is 1.04, but Nero 6.1.1.10 Info Tool says it *can`t* write DVD+R DL media, while VSO Inspector and DVD Info Pro say it can... weird. So far I was unable to find DL media to test it. Maybe this has something with those problems Nero has with DL recording?

Fun part of the story: above that Info tool says it is Type: DVD +-R/RW DL Recorder :) Go figure.

Is that the latest version of the info tool? Maybe that's why it can't recognize the DL capability of the drive.
