The recent benchmarks of Doom 3 by various websites have shown Nvidia's cards emerging as victorious by a huge margin to Ati's cards.
Just few hours after the benchmark scores were released, Ati claimed that their OpenGL driver hadn’t been updated in over a year, since there was hardly a game released for OpenGL for over 3 years. The last optimisation was on the OpenGL Quake 3 engine ages ago. The new 4.9 beta drivers rectify this by providing the latest update to OpenGL version 1.5.
However, ATI cautions using BETA drivers as the drivers are supplied "AS IS" without any support.
The boost in doom 3 performance using the new catalyst drivers should certainly help ATI reduce the performance gap between ATI and Nvidia. Thus the recent splurge of benchmarks can be expected to be updated soon with the official release of the new ATI doom specialist drivers.
"The initial testing of these new drivers at Techtree Labs has shown around 10-12% boost in performance compared to older drivers", Soham Raninga, Reviewer. Stay tuned for detailed benchmark scores on Techtree.com
