Hello!

I just burned my second dvd on NEC 2510A at 8X speed
but something strange happened.

When I looked at the written disc I noticed two different shades,
with the second starting at 60% of the dvd till the end. (The same type of disc
burned at 4X has a uniform shade)

While burning it in Nero, it took more time to burn than the estimated time displayed,
and I belive that the drive lowered the burning speed somehow in the middle of the process.

Anyway the dvd plays fine, and I get a perfect and smooth graph in Nero DVD-Speed.

So my question is why has this happened, has it something to do with the burning speed or is it a problem?

Here are my specs:

DVD disc used : TYG01 4X rated (Nero reports 2X - 8X speed)
DVD Burner : NEC ND-2510A fw 2.15

Nothing wrong with the different shades. I sometimes get 3 different shades on an 8x burn. It's basically down to the way that 8x burning works. DVD writers can't burn at 8x all the way through the disc. My DVD writer will burn at 4x for the first part, 6x for the 2nd part, and 8x for the last part of the disc, hence the 3 shades.

So there's nothing wrong with your discs, it's just the way high speed DVD burning works.

Thank's a lot guys, so you mean that it doesn't affect the overall quality or the disc's life at all?
I have recorded two movies until now (4.24GB size), and well it may sound funny but I thought it
could be the vob. files (just like the tracks in a common audio cd, where they are visible).

Yes, the different shades most certainly means the write strategy is Z-CLV.

I used to see this on my dark-green bottomed Cyanine CD-Rs 2 years ago, can't really tell on Phalocyanine since it s a bright -green color dye.

Yes this is normal, it's just where the drive shifts speeds.

Always used to be seen on CD-R, before P-CAV mode almost completely replaced zone-CLV there - many DVD writers also use zone-CLV for CD-R as well.

For 8x media, a short blip at 4x start, followed by 6x and then 8x seems to be the norm, with the 12x drive starting at 6x and then a much shorter shift to 8x.

Presumably 4x drives start at 2x, unless capable of 100% 4x CLV

It would be nice if you could scan the disc on a flatbed scanner and we could see exactly what this color change is.

If you don't want these Zones on your DVD_R's then buy a PX-712 series since it is the *ONLY* P-CAV DVD writer out atm.. I don't like zones or re-calibration marks since these in theory should produce more PI and C1 errors on the respected media. I hate looking at the Bottom of my Cyanine CD-R's and DVD_R's only to see un-professional-looking contrasting between the zones on my new disc..

My 2 cents on the matter/issue of high-speed recording, and 'zones'.
