I've been doing some research into this sorta thing, and I found an interesting article on CD-R dyes, that might explain this problem. In essence what it says is this:
Cyanine Dye: First dye made, most compatible, ages quickest, and doesn't support 4x or 6x burning
Phthalo-Cyanine: Lasts longer then Cyanine, but not quite as compatible, doesn't support 1x or 2x burning
Azo: lasts long, but even more incompatible
