I read in an older post - someone mentioned that Samsung used disks made by Ritek

is that with all thier product lines?

last year i thought i read in this forum that samsung made thier own disks and came up with a much cheaper manufacturing process that even TDK was thinking of using samsung made disks

when did samsung switch?

makes me disapointed i just purchased 250 samsung disks -damn! I know people praise Ritek but i have never liked them and thier image will always be stained from my past experience

unfortunaly most companies, including Samsung changes their media manufacturers very often so its quite common...

Umm, I *REALLY* wouldn't suggest that to people anymore... I happen to know of several manufacturers who are very soon going to be releasing DVD media with several different codes. We already have seen TDK and Maxell codes on discs not made by TDK or Maxell, but soon we will be seeing discs with Taiyo Yuden's code on them, and from more then just one or two manufacturers... So I would say knowing your discs, and knowing your vendor is the best way to know who made them. Recognizing serial numbers, and buying trustworthy brand names is also a good idea.

As for Samsung, they used to use Ritek quite often for many of their products, however they joined with several other large brand names and ditched Ritek when their DVDR quality started fluctuating too much.

It depends... in the case of Daxon, they sold their ID to Gigastorage for their 8x DVD+R... In the case of Maxell, I hear they might actually be collecting royalties from the small "pirate" plants making the unofficial Maxell code media. Of course, Princo never asked TDK if they could use their media code for their 2x DVD-Rs. Mitsubishi Chemicals on the other hand is getting CMC to use their code and do production for them because it is so much cheaper!

for checking the ID -- your talking about the string of numbers at the center of the disk?

is the prog ADVdinfo reliable?

For myself, I look at EVERY feature of the disc. From the dye colour to the numbers written on the disc, to the font used, to the media ID code... EVERYTHING. I used to keep a spreadsheet of charactoristics too, but now I do it mostly from memory

so basicaly what you guys are saying is you have to risk wasteing money first - check the media with a utility program and then find out you spent money on crap and add it to the pile of useless junk disks

Sometimes, that is all you can do...

However, some brands are reliable in who they use for OEM'ing... and other's are the home brand of the actual manufacturer. So sometimes it isn't so bad.
