I don't have any news from BenQ about the possibility of DW830A supporting -R/-RW formats at the near future...for now!

And I think alot of people are missing the point here!

The media isn't even available. These posts on CDR-Info, and various other boards, are just showing that it is "possible" to flash this or that particular drive. And users have been posting results that the flash was successful, or not successful.

As Dolphinius stated above, wait until the media is available, then purchase a DL drive if you want.

It is always a "risk" to flash a drive to something that it is not. This is done at a User "BEWARE".

We are merely reporting what can be accomplished in certain instances.

I'm sure you can see in this quote from Emperor:

We tested it, proved that POSSIBLY WON'T WORK... I think that pretty much sums it up!

I never commented on your tests of the un official firmware upgrades.

I did comment some facts "not mentioned":

#1: Was the dw830a Book mode, or direct recording intact when you tested? This is for a "real" 830a.

I know that you were testing the DL ability.

However the 830a's or to be flashed 822a's . Nothing is mentioned in the *new* specs (by benq) as to the direct (real time) recording, and the book feature. Since the 830a's are now in distribution, it would be nice to know if those previously stated options are still there or not.

We would not be asking you or emperor or any one else if BenQ actualy answered emails of any kind.

What do you mean, BOOK protocol? Do you mean that you can change the booktype? To my knowledge, that's only good for +R, and it works with the Booktype Management tools (working fine on my 800A with +R).

Ok, here is some news update about the BenQ DW800A->830A reverse order...Benq said that such upgrade isn't possible to be reverse, unless using special utility that only BenQ service centers have, in short words, unless someone makes the proper utility, there is no way to reverse the upgrade process...

There are also some rumours that BenQ will offer with $, official DL firmware upgrade for the DW800A model...No idea yet if this will come true...

Over at a Taiwan Message Board, someone has spent 2-3 days developing a backout. It must run under DOS. That all I know...
Maybe someone who's in trouble wants to progress...

Hi, all, i just bought a 822A,

after going thru the forum, i am abit confuse. For the future upgrade to support DL for 822A, will i still have 8mb buffer or 2mb? also, is the upgrade just merely change the drive to be 830? can anyone kindly enlighten me. thanks

the official DL firmware for 822A should not change the buffer size or anything else from the current abilties of the drive. The firmware upgrade process as described in this thread is not official but rather un-official

Sorry not yet...Since there isn't a reverse back option, for now, we will wait, we don't wish to have 3 DW830A drives lying around here

by the way, i have some problem enabling the UDMA mode in winxp. I dun seem to have the advanced tab,for me to enable udma. Using Nero to check, discovered that both my primary IDE slave hard drive and secondary IDE slave BenQ DVD writer is not in UDMA mode. I really have no idea of what to do to enable them. Both my master drives are in UDMA mode. In my bios, both my primary and secondary IDE channel are set to enable UDMA automatically. I am using 845PE mobo with 2.4B intel processor. It is a Abit mobo. Anyone have this problem? Or isit due to the IDE cables, whereby the connectors are connected wrongly.

just an update of the above question. I check the intel application acceleration, found out, that my primary channel, Master Hddisk is un UDMA5, Slave Harddisk is in UDMA4, secondary channel, Master TDK CDRW is in UDMA2 and my slave BenQ DVD writer is in UDMA2 too.

It seems like there is no way for me to make the DVD writer to be in UDMA4. with is ATA66 recommended by BenQ.
