Hi there.

Can any Plextor 708A owners please tell me how their drive performs with the TY 4x +R discs when they are burnt at 8x ? What's the writing quality in this case ? (some quality diagrams would be good too) Do the disks play in standalone DVD Players, PS2 e.t.c ?

Cause from the couple reviews I've seen, the Plextor's writing quality on the 4x +R TY media burnt at 8x is far from excellent...

Thanks in advance.

Yes they are playable in DVD Players, PS2 e.t.c

Well, this review was one of the ones that made me doubt whether the Plextor works well with the TY +R, recorded at 8x speed... As you can see in the Plextor (TaiyoYuden) 4x DVD+R (Recorded at 8x) diagram, at the end of the disk, there's quite a large area of PO errors as high as 200, which is quite a large number for PO errors as far as I know (...No larger areas on the disc should exceed 32 PO (actually PI uncorrectable) errors, do not worry too much about high single spikes that exceeds 32). If I could take a guess, I would think that this area of the DVD+R is not readable by any player...

Do you happen to have the Plextor and are saying this out of your own experience, or is it just an assumption ?

The device on this review had the first firmware, so after the release of the next firmwares things should be better. I own the 708. As soon as I burn a TY +R media I'll let you know. Most times I use -R.

I see. So can anyone provide links to diagrams of the Plextor using the latest firmware ? Or gimme his opinion on these media based on his personal experience ?

OK, here is an update with some extra media:

read it HERE

Thanks for the update... It's funny though that the reason this thread was made (i.e. the Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD+R media burnt at 8x) was not included in that update...

Yes, indeed. Unfortunately, there were no TY +R available at this moment.

I'm sure that they will have it on mind.

Hopefully someone will post TY results as soon as they are available. But anyways, most probably I'll go buy the NEC 2500A which has won my preference just today...

I've almost decided to go for the NEC because of Herrie's firmwares...
