saloeun: That makes sense, I've still never seen any CD-R or CD-RW die in such a way. I'd be interested in seeing how they compare on the rigerous testing field. you have a creative 52x??? my condolances! my mother and I have both had to return our Creative 52x's twice to get one that works for longer then a month...eventually I got sick of doing that and bought and AOpen 52x (which I NOW hear is a little more prone to shattering CDs then the average 52x....). But still, 6 DIFFERENT creative 42x drives in 3 momths! the only good thing I have to say about them is that my mother's last one is still working. And it's not like we use them that often either, just to save a little wear and tear on our burners (and in my case DVD-ROM).

your right creative drives do suck. that one actually stoped working after about 1 and a half week. i really didn't like dealing with customer service people and since the drive didn't cost that much i just tossed it
