This may seem like an odd question but I was wondering if anyone knew how to write data onto a specific area of a CDR. By area I mean physical area, say 2 inches from the outside edge of the CDR in a circle, or something similar.

Normal drives cannot do this, only with special firmware, why you need such advanced writing needs?

It's for a summer project I'm working on with CDRs and chemical analysis. The part of the disc with the data on it becomes the probe, so the location is important. It's not a protected CD.

I've read somewhere that you can write data onto a specific track (?) on a CD and then from there figure out where the data has been written. But I'm not an quite sure how that works.
