Eggplant: I have the CRW-F1, it's a fantastic drive. Yamaha releases firmware for their drives as needed. I, like you had a problem with the write speeds, however after purchasing the drive, I have noticed that the write speeds are not an issue, if you choose Optimum Speed Write Control (OSWC) then the drive will choose the best writing speed for the media that you have inserted. This works fantastic, if you insert high quality media, you can write up to the 44X speed without any problems. A big feature that sold me was the 24X re-write CDRW speed, this is a feature that I have been waiting for. The Disc T@2 function is just an added bonus. You'll get great support from Yamaha (unequaled by any other). I can't speak for the Plex drive, you'll have to make an informed decision for yourself, but don't let the user "select" speed be a setback for you, as stated in alot of earlier posts, because it is not a problem.
