I have friend who has a Mitsumi CR-485CTE which in CDRinfo tests was able to copy SD 2.51 with AWS of CloneCD. I can also do this, but it won't work with SD 2.6. I've tested this only with CDRW discs (after a failed first try with ES3 Morrowind).

So I'm wondering are there any writers that don't support full hardware EFM and are able to copy SD 2.6 with software EFM.

How about the Yamaha 3200 for example?!

there was a major change in the SD v2.51 with two versions:

- v2.51.020
- v5.51.021

The first build can be backuped with many drives, while the second with a few one

I'm planning on buying the Yamaha 3200 (or a Plextor drive) which I heard works very well with the AWS function of CloneCD.

That's why I'm interested if anyone here knew of Yamaha or any drives without hardware EFM capability that would be able to back up SD 2.60.052 with AWS?

Or am I forced to buy a LG or a Liteon drive to be able to make working backups nowadays...

Plextor's PX-W4012TA/TU, PX-W2410TA/TU can copy SD v2.60.052 as found on Grand Prix 4, with AWS on, new'er' CCD 4 and play everywhere [:I]

But I'm quite sure the Yamaha CRW3200E/CRW-F1 could aswell

PX-W4012A, PX-W2410A, CRW-F1 write 'almost' correct regular bit patterns natively anyway, so any version of SD2 (pre) <v2.51.021, can be copied perfectly, without the need for AWS.

CRW3200E needs some sort of sector amplification method (AWS etc...) in order to produce backups that play everywhere.

Oh, [forgot] add *new* PleXWriter PX-W4824TA/TU in the list of the 24X & 40X Plextor's, as I don't think it will write *perfect* regular bit patterns (i.e. correct EFM encoding), but *almost* too. This seems quite accurate, according to Elby. But, wait for review of PX-W4824A here before the final word regarding it's EFM encoding capabilities .

Thanks for the help. I'll try to keep my hands off the Yamaha 3200 until I know for sure about the new Plex 48 and it's capabilities.

I prefer the Yamaha, but I'm bit paranoid about it since I noticed in the CDRinfo review of Yamaha F1 that it wasn't able to copy SD 2.6 even with AWS on.
I haven't seen any tests about the 3200 and SD 2.6 so I'm looking for confirmation either way.

I just noticed even the guys at Elby make mistakes. The Mitsumi 485CTE was originally shown in their list as fully EFM capable writer, but now they've corrected it to show only one sheep...

Hi Veridian
Well I can assure you that the Yamaha CRW-F1 will do a Backup of any Version of Safedisc including the Latest with Clone CD and AWS. I have yet to come across anything it won't back up and the 3200e will do the same !!!
I hope this helps !!!

Yes we didn't made the CRW-F1 work even with AWS enabled for v2.50.021+ builds, in every drive...

higher builds than 2.50.021 are the same (2.60.xxx and maybe even 2.70.xxx)

Well all I can say is I did it both on the 3200e and the F1 with Clonae CD and the Latest Firmware so I guess I must just be lucky or something !!!

Hi Laffin.
What drives have you tried where the copies work and what writing speed did you use?
The CDRinfo tests showed that they were written at max speed. But CDFreaks also reports they were able to copy SD 2.51-> with 3200 and F1.
Could the writing speed have an effect in copying SD 2.51-> with these drives since they have to use AWS?!

Don't hammer me completely if this doesn't make sense to anyone[:p]

I'll second Laffin's motion. I copied SD2.6 discs with both the yamaha 3200 and the CRW-F1 without any problem, used AWS setting, and the discs will work perfectly in every drive I've tested them in.
