I experimented with SHN files earlier in life and gave up on them. I know they advertise there is a "NO LOSS" of frequencies of music files that have been converted to SHN format. This is a bunch of "Hype" The problem, converting music to SHN creates the pops you are talking about. SHN is great for data, but that is where it stops for now, unless improvements are made. MP3's, encoded badly, or by a novice will sound the same. I'll put a LAME encoded VBR MP3 up against any original WAV file, and you'll not notice any difference from the original recording. Stick with the industry format (MP3), use EAC to rip and LAME to encode, you will have quality to last a lifetime.

SHN files are popular with people who collect recordings of live performances because these people will know what they are getting. SHN files can be copied and passed around endlessly and still maintain the same quality as the original. Compare that to MP3s, which are lower quality to begin with (due to the lossy compression), and are often subject to generational loss -- the quality continues to deteriorate each time they are converted to WAV, ripped from a CD, or downloaded over Napster (files from Napster are often cut off due to either the remote person disconnecting or bugs in old versions of the Napster software).
