good point

my motherboard manual says that the furthest connector from the m/b
is always master, but liteon manual says that middle connecter should
be master.these are both refering to 80 conducter cables 66/100.
But my board has raid so there are four ide channels so im set up as master on all.

i had a problem once like that, it was the position of the cdrom drive on the cable itself, some mobo's like the master as the middle connector on the cable, some like the end some dont care which one you use, try using it on a different ide connector on the cable when set as master slave etc.. . Have you been using the same connector all along, if so , that could be your problem

crank the speed until the disk melts!

Hey Space,
Your problem sounds pretty bad ! After reviewing all the posts the only thing I could think of is to inspect the pins on the board and on the drive. Sometimes they can get bent.

I checked out your motherboard and I didn't like the onboard audio chipset . Maybe try disabling the audio if u can .
