I bought an Acer 24x10x40 3 weeks ago and i'm still baffled... It came with PrimoCD (Veritas) which works fine, except the interface for sorting files is more unix like. Works also with Nero, and CloneCD - Roxio is a no no for this drive.

Hardisk is UDMA 100 - I can't get the freaking burner to burn at 24x using any programs. I've burnt over 30 cd's - and the write speed will never exceed 16x. Most times i'm able to achieve only a 12x max average. It's bad that the company is selling a drive that doesn't do 24x or even 20x.

Anyone want an Acer 24x10 to buy or for free... you'll have to pay for shipping and handling though :-)

But have you tried enabling DMA for the drive?

Using Roxio here with Acer 24 speed drive. No problem.

Is this a new drive? A combo of an Acer and a Liteon. we could call it a Licer or an Aceon....LOL...

This may sound stupid but you are using discs rated for the top speed?
x16 discs will burn only up to sixteen.The drive detects the quality and sets max speed for the disc.

Is that only when just using certain software?
So far with LiteOn, all my old 12x media burns without problems at the max speed of 24x.

As far as I know it all depends on the drive testing the media automatically and obviously if the media is better than it is actually rated then it will be accepted for higher burn speed.
It does not depend on the certified rating of the media but the actual quality of the media.As far as I know it is a test routine embedded in the firmware of the writer though I am not sure that this is the case.

This is what I have been told and some attempts to use media rated for slower speed have borne it out.It'd be interesting if someone involved in CD-RW technology could get in on this and confirm or deny it cos this is just info I have heard here and there.
