Samsung Electronics saw a surge in LCD-TV shipments in the second quarter, partly due to a jump in sales of LED-backlit televisions, a research firm said.

Samsung held on to its lead in the global LCD-TV market in the quarter, shipping 5.7 million units, up from 5.1 million in the first quarter, iSuppli said in releasing its quarterly report Thursday. As a result, Samsung's market share rose to 18.5% from 12%.

"Samsung in the second quarter was very aggressive in introducing and marketing LCD-TVs that featured LED backlights," iSuppli analyst Riddhi Patel said in a statement. "This put Samsung at the forefront of this fast-growing technology trend, helping to boost the company's sales during the period."

Meanwhile, Samsung on Friday said it expects to sell at least 2 million LCD TVs with LED backlights this year and at least 10 million next year, news agency Reuters reported. The company expects to sell at least 22 million LCD TVs overall this year.

LCD TVs require a backlight in order to present a visible image. Historically, LCDs have used fluorescent lamps as backlights, however, falling prices for LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, has made them a viable alternative. LEDs carry a number of advantages, including greater power savings and the elimination of toxic materials used in fluorescent lamps. In addition, LEDs makes it possible to build thinner TVs.

Shipments of LCD TVs with LED backlights will reach 4.5 million units this year, a tenfold increase from 2008, iSuppli predicts. By 2013, shipments will rise to 98.8 million, accounting for 42.5% of the global LCD-TV market.

While Samsung remained No. 1 in the market in the second quarter, second-place LG Electronics had the highest growth rate of the top five, increasing shipments 20% quarter-to-quarter to 3.5 million units. LG's growth was due to increased shipments in emerging markets, where people were buying their first LCD-TVs, iSuppli said.

Rounding out the top five vendors were Sharp, Sony and Philips, respectively.

Global LCD-TV shipments rose 14.1% in the second quarter to 30.7 million units from 26.9 million units in the previous quarter, iSuppli said. Driving sales were lower prices for older sets and the introduction of more advanced models.
