Here's what I'm looking for in rough order of importance :
Good error correction , especially for CDs.
Good writing quality .
Low noise.
Good DVD rippping performance.
Scanning features would be nice but not critical.

These brands avaliable to me:
Asus, LG, Lite-On, Pioneer, Samsung, Sony & Sony NEC Optiarc

Thanks.

It's a shame you cannot get a Samsung SH-S203B... It's a great all around drive.  Not the best ripper and it can scan, just not jitter with a reg hack... The LITE-ON may be an acceptable scanner, but that is the only reason I would buy one after my Plextor and BenQ drives die.

I own a Pioneer DVR-212D (the 215D is coming soon) and it is a good drive too...  Decent DVD ripper, does not bitset DVD+R media (does for DL though).  The Pioneer is probably the best DL burner I have used.... But my needs there are very few and far between.

LG's are usually great burners but RIPLOCK  is a problem... additionally, their latest are not good CD-R writers... which I still do need.  Never owned an Asus, but my friend has a newer model and is not happy with it.  Never owned an Optiarc...

Just food for thought.

These are the SATA optical drives I am using today:
Samsung SH-S203B
Pioneer DVR-212D
Plextor PX-755SA
LG GSA-H62N

I'm not sure I follow you, why not the Samsung?

Anyway, I found a review at CDFreaks and it looks like a very nice drive. The price is right too.

Only question  is how's the error correction?

Thanks for directing my attention to this drive.

I think I read your post prior to your edit... When I saw it Samsung was not on your list.  If you are going to get one drive, and one only, it has to be the Samsung SH-S203B.  CDfreaks Forums have tons of positives and negatives about the drive... Might be worth a look for you.  It is the one I use the most for burning @ 16x with great results on Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media... That said, if you plan on buying marginal to low grade media, the Pioneer will probably be your best option.

Since my last reply I read posts about the S203B and 212/112 on the forums.
I went ahead and ordered the SH-S203B.
And after reading the article about the upcoming 215D it felt it was a better choice considering I couldnt hold off my purchase and the S203B was a tad cheaper than the 212.
Thanks for making me fell confident about my purchase. :)
