Hi, I'm new here.

I have a bit of a problem that I thought maybe you could help me with. I reinstalled Windows Xp and my dvd drive will not burn files to disc now. I tried "enabling recording" in the recording settings but that doesn't help. My drive type is a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA 4020-B if that helps. I looked for some kind of update but found nothing. I am also missing roxio easy cd creator, which I need to find and re-install, but I'm not sure if that's my problem or not. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Yeah, you are going to need a burning package installed.  If you can't find your Roxio installation CD, there are some free alternatives...  Personally not fond of it, but DeepBurner Free might work for you.

Ok, so I tried DeepBurner Free, but I don't think that is my problem. I keep getting the error "Windows has encountered a problem when trying to copy this file."

All I'm trying to do is backup music in case of a hard drive failure, or burn a file to a dvd for storing etc. I have read alot of other forums of people with the same problem, but no one seems to have an answer. Thanks,

You can see if there is a firmware update available for your drive (GMA 4020-B) and try using some quality media... namely Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

Hello again, I realize I posted this quite a while back, but I wonder if this has anything to do with my problem:

When the local computer store re-installed Windows, I believe that the drive letters changed. We have two drives in our computer, one is a CD Drive, and the one that is having problems is a DVD drive that used to be able to write cds and dvds. I noticed that when we got our computer back, the cd drive which was labeled "E:" is now "F:" and vice versa. I'm not sure if this is my problem or if it doesn't matter, but my drive still won't write discs. It will read both cds and dvds, but will not write discs. It shows there is no disc in when I try to use Wmp or iTunes to burn something, and will also not write files to disc from a folder. I haven't flashed the drive yet, but may have to do that.

If you have any ideas, I would be appreciative.

Thanks,

Drive letters can be changed through the Disk Administrator at will so I'm pretty sure that does not matter in your case.  Try the firmware update and post back indicating what brand and type of media you are trying to write to.
