At the Optical Media Global Industry Awards 2006, Optical Disc Systems (ODS!) magazine honoured Dr. Shuji Nakamura with the Global Innovation Leader Award for his commitment and dedication to the development of the Blue Laser Diode that has resulted in the next generation optical media formats for High definition. The Awards function took place at the 6th Disc-Tech Expo at the Raja Bagh Lawns, Taj Palace Convention Centre on April 6, 2006.

Also present to felicitate Dr. Nakamura was Carl Langenskiold, President of the Media-Tech Association, Germany. Deepak Puri, Chairman and Managing Director  of  Moser  Baer  India  welcomed Mr. Nakamura with a shawl of honour. Also present was Vikram Choksi, Executive Director of Hindustan Platinum, India’s only target manufacturer.

The event was attended by all the exhibitors of the Disc-Tech Expo, the international convention of the optical media industry that attracts the leading global optical disc equipment manufacturers and replicators.

This is the first time that the optical media industry has acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Nakamura, whose efforts date way back to 1993, at Nichia Corporation, that controls the supply of blue laser diodes to Toshiba for HD DVD and Sony BD players and Playstations. 

It is because of the invention of the blue laser diode, that associations like the Blu Ray Disc Association have been able to bring forth the Blu Ray Disc and HD DVD technologies. It is the breakthrough of Nakamura’s invention that has led to the formation of the Blu Ray Disc Association.

Dr. Nakamura accepted the OM award for Global Innovation Leader most humbly “I never expected this award. I thank ODS! magazine for recognition of my achievement” He also went on to say, “I would like the world to share my technology”
