Nokia is introducing a GPS (Global Positioning System) module for some if its mid-range handsets that can tag a user's position to within five meters to allow for navigation services, it announced on Friday.

The Nokia GPS Module LD-3W, scheduled to ship by the end of this quarter, will work with some of Nokia's Bluetooth-enabled phones, such as the S60 series, the 6230i and 6280. It is sold separately and connects with the phone via Bluetooth, said Benjamin Lampe, a Nokia spokesman.

The device is expected to retail for about 110 euro ($132), excluding taxes and any operator subsidies, Lampe said. Offering the module as an add-on for its mid-range handsets will help bring GPS capabilities to a wider audience, according to Nokia.

Using mapping software from companies like Wayfinder Systems or Telmap, the GPS device will find the easiest route to a destination, Nokia said. The module will be shown off at the 3GSM World Congress conference next week in Barcelona.
