Hey guys, calm down!!! As you can read in the subject of this post you have the possibility to flash the 1.01 firmware, which - by the way - is NOT available yet.... So why do you need the 1.02 if you don't even know what they've changed?!?!?!?!

Yeah, calm down. The last 1.01 and 1.02 firmware could be identical, since they have same release date. Could be a renamed 1.01 "b".

By the way, the MP3Mogul 1.01 firmware is now hosted on the " rpc1.org " site too

Yes, I uploaded it to them!

Also, I have discovered if you use the LG auto firmware update program, if you change it's properties to run in Win95 compatability mode, it will work..... not that there is any update for it, but it runs like that ok...

I bought this drive (GSA-4166B) a few weeks ago from Best Buy. However, I just now got around to actually opening the box and installing it.

The CD that comes with it is warped and will not play in any CD drives so I can't install the correct drivers. I called LG to get a new disk, but they told me that the CD is created by a 3rd party and they do not have the disks in stock to re-send.

Does anybody have the correct drivers available?

Thanks for your time

Thanks for that info on the LG ODD software bug.  You are right, when you open the folder, the executable files need to be set toWindows 95 compatibility.   The "out of memory" message no longer pops up, only the message that there are no updates.

So, please tell me -- is there a way to "back up" the firmware in the LG drive?

No. Otherwise the 1.02 firmware will be here since a couple of days...

There's no drivers but some softwares :
- Nero Express 6 LightScribe Edition (with an official licence !)
- PowerDVD (limited to 2.0 audio...), Powerproducer Gold (awfull...)

So if you already own nero 6.6, you've got to download only this LS Host Software : http://dl1.nero.com/LS_HSI.EXE
and launch Nero CoverDesigner...

In case Nero CoverDesigner doesn't work, you can use the free "SureThing CD Labeler 4 SE" available on lightscribe.com :

There has to be some drivers somewhere... when I let Windows install the drive by default... it is using a Microsoft Driver from 11/14/1999.

I tried installing the "SureThing CD Labeler" and un-installing the LG drive... rebooted... still used the Microsoft Driver.

It doesn't even see it as a DVD drive. It just uses a generic CD rom driver.

I have confirmed with LG that firmware 1.01 and 1.02 for the LG-GSA-4166b are the same.  The only difference is additional media codes in 1.02

@ rocketTendon: You CAN only use generic drivers for cd or dvd drives (burner or not doesn't matter). @ MP3Mogul: Nice information! On the other hand... we all like additional media codes. :D *LMAO*

The 4166 (1.00-1.01) will be supported in next MCSE (V1.0.7.9) coming this days, I was in contact with ala42 and did some tests with 1.01 modified firmwares (I burn a YUDEN T02 @ YUDEN T03 at a 12X speed with a modified .bin provided by ala42 !).
http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/
(I will post a BenQ 1620 PI/PIF scan of this overspeed back home.)

The more interesting :
We will see what mediacode is supported in a .bin firmware and what speed is supported for each mediacode. For those who want to experiment, strategy swapping is even possible... with some restrictions : yeah, on the bad news side, the 4X speed table seems locked and maybe the -R speed table too. But this need some further experiments.
