Siemens recently announced that it has joined the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), a group of international companies pushing for increased adoption of Linux worldwide. The mobile phone manufacturer will be participating in OSDL’s Carrier Grade Linux (CGL), Mobile Linux Initiative (MLI), and Data Center Linux (DCL) working groups. Linux is a free open-source operating system based on Unix that is quickly making headway into a number of industries, and not just mobile phones.

According to Reinhold Achatz, Software and Engineering Division Head over at Siemens Corporate Technology, Siemens is internationally known for developing leading technologies for global customers and providing them with the best solutions to meet their business needs. By joining OSDL, the company hopes to “work with other vendors, as well as customers and the development community, to bring high quality products” to the marketplace.

OSDL is more than happy to have Siemens aboard. Stuart Cohen, CEO, says that OSDL is looking “forward to tapping [Siemen’s] Linux expertise for our Carrier Grade Linux, Mobile Linux Initiative and Data Center Linux working groups.”
