Yes, this is usually a "media" problem, and not the drive.... I have been running 1.01 firmware for quite some time without any problems, and many people here have.

Since the media does work in another DVD-RAM drive and the GSA-4166B has had no problems reading and writing these discs some time ago, I think it's rather a problem with the drive itself than a problem with this special media.

I don't use -R media, but I have tested DL +R media and it works fine.  Also I have tested 5x RAM discs, and they work fine as well!

thx MP3Mogul.

I've burned some DVD+R DoubleLayer discs and they are performing quite well, but I'm still eager to find out whether DVD-Rs DualLayer offer better compatibility on hardware players (as soon as prices reach a sane level ).

Hello,

is the DVD-R DL feature - "Layer Jump Recording" really supported or not?

According to  http://us.lge.com/:

http://us.lge.com/download/product/file/1000000735/gsa4166b_specsheet.pdf

and ImgBurn it's not:

but http://de.lge.com/ says it is:

At least one thing is for sure - this LG drive is quite good but LG's online documentation is NOT .

Please note.   I posted a dual layer scan at cdfreaks here:  http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=139196&page=7#post1277077

Notice that there is NO layer break on the burn.  I found it a bit odd...but maybe this is what is meant by this.  Thoughts?

Bob

Total burn was over 6GB and unlike any other DL burn I ever did with my Plextor or Benq...there is NO layer break...Hmmm

I didn't know about this feature, but now that it's been mentioned, the scans I did on the dual layer discs I burned with mine show absolutely no difference at the break, no increase or decrease in errors, so maybe....?  I'm not sure.

I clicked on the .pdf link on lge's site you posted above, but it says "nothing" about layer-jump.

AFAIK the Layer Jump Recording is a DVD-R DualLayer feature only. It's not supported by DVD+R DoubleLayer (see that snapshot above).

The fuss about it might be, that by using LJR the user could "pick" the ideal layer break point for DVD-R DL - fixing a disadvantage over DVD+R DL.

Hello
Could somebody send me a *.bin of a GSD 2166D firmware? I updated mine with a 4166 one and now i have problem with reading dvds (though only dvds written by this writer particularly), so i think that any version of a 2166 would work just to change the name of the drive from 4166 to 2166 then update it with the official firmware.
thx !

Thanks, the drive is now correctly seens as a GSA 2166D.
But it seems it did not change anything, it still can't read the dvds it has written. These medias are Sony 8x DVD+R. I can read "noname" dvds though...

I stopped using Sony media long ago.  I stick mainly to Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemical) or Taiyo Yuden and have NO problems with either brand.  For DVD+RW I have Ricoh and Ritek (8X) and my 4166B reads them all with no issues.  Be careful with Sony media...either really good or pretty bad...very little inbetween.  Try Verbatim and see if you have the same issues...

Could be a bad batch of media, could be your drive could be going bad... if you can test in another system.

Last news : I tried with another pc, and it works from time to time (meaning, the same dvd won't be seen once, or twice, then it will be recognized and will work)...I didn't try that with the notebook, i'll test tomorrow.
On my pc dvd reader, the dvds work all the time (though it's a 5 years old noname dvdrom !)
Edit : For instance the last dvd i tried : first try, nothing. second, nothing. third, recognized. fourth, nothing. fifth, recognized. sixth, nothing...
It can still write, i just tried. Problem is that it can't read the dvd it has just written (but the old dvd reader can). And i can't use my guarantee to exchange it as they ll see i installed 4166 firmware..damn
