hi! Got myself that same drive, gsa-4166b. I've got a problem though. dvd drive speed prog gives me error that says logical unit communication error, udma32 crc and a code 040803. system is win xp corp ed, ancient via mobo 133-c something. what does that error mean. what shoul be checked first?

Looks like you don't have DMA enabled... this is a UDMA4 drive.

I get an error that says:

Can not initialize: 27D4

Can you resend it to me again. Maybe the upload was corrupted???

I do have dma enabled. I realized that udma4 needs a 80-wire cable and theres only atapi-2 cable included. how come?

I read reviews of the external 2166B and the internal 4167B.

It seems that for 16x DVD +- writing, the 2166B uses slower CAV compared to the P-CAV of 4167B. For 48x CDR, the 2166B uses CAV while 4167B uses Z-CLV.

Does the same apply for the internal 4166B?

thanks

Yes, the internal drive is the same.  The x166 drives use a Panasonic chipset while most LG drives use Renesas chipsets.

I got my drive working. I changed the ide cable to udma4 cable and voila!
Makes me think what really is the idea on putting a udma2 cable in the retail package because the drive didnt work at all, not reading or writing!

I have the LG GSA 4166B and I hooked it up with the cable that came with it i think its a atapi cable and the drive isnt working properly. all Ive tried to do so far is just run DVDs on it and its not playing them smoothly. I set the udma to 2 because thats what I read to do with a atapi cable. can anyone help me?

October drives come with 1.00 firmware : thanks mogul  for the november firmware 1.01

ala42 (MCSE author) opens the firmware and saw that the "GSA-4164B" word was in it : 4164 = 4166
Another evidence :

Some tests :

A/ A Memorex DVD+RW 4X burned on the LG 4166 fw 1.01 and scanned with my BenQ 1620 :

B/ A Maxell DVD+R 4X in box (YUDEN T01 - best 4X blank discs I've ever seen) burned on the LG @4X, scanned on the BenQ :

C/ A yellox Datawrite DVD+R 8X (MCC003 dye) burned @8X on the LG 4166 and scanned with the BenQ :

Does any hardware(PCB) different between October and november drives?

Actually, my drive was manufactured in November and it came with 1.00 firmware as well.... I have a friend at the factory, and he emailed me the 1.01 firmware.... the official release will come soon.
