is it any good?

I'm a bit of a Lite on fan and am thinking of getting one to replace my lite on 52x CD burner.

Are they any good?

Can I still burn 99 min CD's with it?

Please complain to LiteOn for not sending us a drive for testing.
I would suggest to all users to always buy drives among those that have been tested thoroughly by reputable (preferably:) on-line publications.
If anyone knows other CD sites that have revewed it, please let him post here.

Yes, there are plenty of shops that ship to Canada. PCSuppySource.Com is one of them, they have a fairly large collection.

As far as the 411 review, perhaps Dolphinius would like to write one, as he has recently flashed his 401 to a 411. I have previously searched for a review on this drive, as I ran across them so "cheap" basically cheaper than a CDRom Drive, that I had considered purchasing one.

After however, not being able to find a review, I passed on the drive, especially since it was so cheap.

SP, further, I have just emailed LiteOn with your proposal! Perhaps in a few weeks they will contact the board.....at least, they are good at getting firmware out weekly it seems.

Hrm... The LiteON 411s eh?

Well, I can say this about it: The CD-R/RW writing quality is incredible!!!

The DVD+R/RW writing quality is pretty good, and I really have no complaints. The DVD-R writing quality leaves a little to be desired though. On the whole I have burned zero coasters with it, although I use almost entirely Ritek DVD-Rs, and Ritek/Ricoh DVD+R/RWs on it. I have used some no name DVD+Rs as well, and the only problem I had was only being able to write them at 2x instead of their "certified" 4x. All things considered I am very satisfied, but I would not recommend the drive over say a Pioneer A06 or an Optorite DD0203. How's that?

edit: I found a review for the drive now: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/127/1

OK, I am writing this because the temptation to do so is high:))

I do not like to critisize other sites, and certainly I believe there should be a sense of frendship among the on-line publications devoted to similar technical aspects of computing. But I think that the depth and broadness of our reviews is unparalleled in this industry. We prove it every day and I hope we will be able to extend this leadership by providing to our audiense levels of information unheard before:))

This board, as well, proves daily that we and YOU are free to diseminate information, regardless of its origin. There will always be free space here for everything good published elsewhere.

There will be NO place for hate and unfair practices. We do declare this and our moderators will always enforce these rules, as they already do in an excellent way!

SP, I agree with you 100000 Percent! We should not be trying so much to "compromise" our results, or our publications. But I can say, that it does seem those "other" sites "RUSH" to make a publication, and it is not always the total truth. I have noticed that some of these "SITES" go back and change their results.

Since I have been here, CDR-Info has continually produced specific, clear unbiased results, and this is one of the reasons that I have remained "loyal" and "dedicated" to this site.

It is great to get an "honest" unbiased opinion on a drive, or software, as we do on this site.

I would just like to say, "CHANGE NOTHING, IT'S GREAT!"

couldn't resist Buying the Liteon 411S on sale for $100 out the
door at an Office Depot sale. But the Drive did not work until
I flashed the latest 0F firmware. So far so good...

From experience, I would suggest Ricoh/Ritek made DVD+Rs for use in the LiteON DVD burner. Ritek G04 DVD-Rs also work fairly well, but the drive seems to like burning DVD+Rs more then DVD-Rs.

Is there anyway to get this drive to write DVD-R's better. I am
using the Fuji-Film DVD-R's.

I have 2 very old DVD players that play the DVD-R's with blocky and
stuttering video. They play DVD+R's produced by the 411s just fine.

The problem is that my year old panasonic RP62 will not play
DVD+R's. It will play the DVD-R's but with the same problem as the
other players.

Try burning the DVDRs as slowly as possible, and maybe try Mitsubishi Chemicals DVD-Rs (Verbatim Datalife Plus).

This drive is "VERY" weak on writing DVD -R's......... this has become to be "expected" from the manufacturer.... perhaps they will get it fixed with a new firmware, as they release them almost daily......... I would at least hope this would be the case.
