question, do DVD+RW exist in DL ? if not do you think our burner (like the benq 1640 I have) will be able to handle it ? via firmware upgrade or will it mean to buy a
Following the DVD+R DL concept, in the DVD+RW DL, two different layers should be mounted together and offer adequate optical characteristics in terms of light (laser) reflectivity and transmission at the same time.
According to the DVD+RW Alliance, the rewritable double layer DVD+RW DL standard will be finalized by year end.
Since the RW media use a phase-change material which have a much higher absorption than the dyes in write-once discs, it would not be possible to design a DVD rewritable dual-layer system that complies to the DVD standard, which requires a 18% reflectivity. As a result, the DVD+RW DL media would not be compatible with current
DVD players, and a
hardware upgrade (not firmware) would be an essential before using it.
The upcoming DVD+RW DL media will be likely addressed for use in camcorders (8cm), which will natively support the format in hardware. The supported recording speeds will be 2.4x and 4x, although the 8x is also included in the standard.
