our DVR-110D review would be updated soon with the 1.17 results, it seems that Pioneer further improved the drive's burning abilities

117 must be a big improvement when you update the review :)

I have a Pioneer DVR-107D and found it very reliable.  I blindly bought the DVR-110D trusting it would perform solidly like my DVR-107D.  I WAS WRONG.  I installed the latest firmware revision (v1.17) as of 9/10/2005.  I encountered multiple and consistant READ errors even on "retail/pressed" DVDs!  Already wasted way too much time running through my tests on this drive and now I have to ship it back for return and probably pay some "restocking fees"!  Pioneer has been removed from my trusted brand list!

Maybe you had a defect drive? That can happen sometimes, because prices are low.

An updated review with the 1.17fw will be released this week...

Only write-tets, i guess? Will only the problematic media tested or generally the write-quality?

I just bought the 110 and put it into the USB external box.  If I want to update the FW  to the latest(ver 1.17), can I update it through the USB box or I have to put it onto the IDE (master - opening the computer is something I do not want to do unless absolutely necessary?)  Please help.  thanks.  I do not want to kill my new drive.

Hard to say. A colleague from me flashed a 107 in external box without problems, but it can be different when using an other box, it depends on the bridge-chip.

The sure way is put out of the box and flash on IDE

I burned 35~37 dvd media. Actually the write-quality from the beginning.

As for readings I don't think the drive had any issues so I left this part as it was.

I hope to release it on Wednesday, if everything goes on schedule.

Looking forward to the update!

The updated review  is ready.

You can read it here.

Looks better, but there is still room for improvement for 16x-writing.

Hope, the 110 (DVD-RAM) is a bit better

It seems that Pioneer tries at least to improve their drives. It is good for me but yes with the next firmware all issues might be fixed.
