Hi guys,

Could anyone tell me which of these two drives would be a better buy? The 716 seems to have a lot more features, like PoweRec, VariRec, Intelligent Tilt, GigaRec and AutoStrategy, and has 8Mb buffer compared to 2Mb for the 740. However, the 740 is faster at writing for several media (except DVD-R DL) and has a different (better?) chipset than the traditional Plextor drives. On the other hand, the 716 seems to be able to read at various speeds whereas the 740 appears not to be able to. The 716 also has disk quality verification capabilities. Are all these features that seem to have been dropped from the 740 important?

Basically, you're going to have to decide on this one. The only thing that the 740 writes faster on is Dual Layer Media (8x) but the 716 writes at 6x. The Plextor 740 is actually a rebadged BenQ 1640.

The 740 (BenQ Rebadge) is a superb drive, but I have both, and the Plextor 716 is also superb! Basically the decision is yours, and I do not think you will be disappointed no matter which one you choose.

Yeap, both are great. I liked all the features of the 716. You must decide what is more important for you. If I had to go for a new burner BenQ 1640 would be my choise and if I couldn't get any BenQ in my area then Plextor 740, but all this according to my needs.
