You should consider yourself lucky.
I had a Plextor once, a 708A. The thing burned, @8x, but then I stumbled into a proble: Many discs stuttered upon playback, and had what were called "hard errors" on them, meaning they couldn't be copied again. They were not good copies.
I sold this drive and got me a Nec 2510A. Best [burning] drive I ever owned. No errors whatsoever,, even if I burn various times one after the other.

The PX 708a also refused to read any CD_R's, after I tried to format a CD-RW with it. Oh, and also gave me quite a lot of trouble burning in linux (wouldn't be recognized as a DVD-Burner, didn't go past 2x, etc.)

Now I'm looking for the best "ripping" drive I can get, mainly in Rip Quality, not necessarily Rip Speed. It should be able to read all discs, not give me CRC' erros (such as y NEC gives me when reading some lightly dammaged discs) Is this new BenQ the drive I'm looking for?

You already asked this question in a different section, and it has been answered.  Yes, the new BenQ 1640 should be a good reader, it's also the Plextor 740 drive.  (or should I say the Plextor 740 is a BenQ 1640!) LOL, anyway, as I stated in that post, I use a LiteOn DVD ROM 167T to rip, but the newer LiteOn DVD ROM works fantastic as well, and they are also very cheap price wise.

I can say that in my preliminary testing, the Plextor 740 is a very fast reader.  I reads a dual layer DVD-Video disc at 12x max, something few DVD writers can do.  It also can read single layer discs at 16x, again a rare feat (many drives claim to, but few do).  Also, it can do this out of the box, without any unofficial "modifications."  For a fast reader, this is an outstanding choice.

Anyway, I'm surprised that the plextor, given its reputation, gave me so much trouble, and of course this made me reluctant towards future purchases from plex. Their CD-RW drives rocked, back in the day when my ricoh gave me buffer underruns just for the heck of it.

 I was also very unimpressed with Plextor's 708, 712, and 716 drives.  With the amount of problems they were having, they hardly seemed worth the "premium" prices they were charging.  The 740A, so far, has really impressed me.  It may be worth its price just as a reader.
