Recent plextor drives have a DOA history?  Not that I know of.  I now have a total of 9 of them, and they all work flawless, from the time I have opened the boxes.

Have you forgotten the PX-716a's TLA#0000 fiasco? It was followed by the PX-716a's TLA#0101 fiasco

But the current PX-716a's seem to work well.

Guess this is why I didn't purchase the 716 when it was first released.  I don't even recall reading about that.

Hey guys,

I bought this Benq today, my first DVD-RW.
Now, I installed the thing like it should be installed, IDE and power cable are fine and so is the jumper I guess (slave). Hardware been recognised at startup.. I insert a dvd movie Hide and Seek and it plays wonderfull.
So after that I found it was time to try and burn my first DVD-R.
But the moment I insert an empty DVD-R, the led flashes a couple of times, then it stays on and I see the "dvd-rw" under de drives name goes to "cd-rw". All the time it does nothing except showing an error "cannot find drive" or something (mine is in Dutch >_<)
I right clicked the drive after I eject the disc and checked the checkbox for "allow drag media from desktop and burn" blabla, now it doesn't give me the cannot find -error anymore, but it still doesn't work. It now shows that the disc is 0 kb.. So I cant burn. And it still goes to "cd-rw". When I eject the dvd-r, it goes back to dvd-rw.

Tried to download the firmware, but the site gives me an error too when I wanna go to the download link.

Any suggestions please ? Its 3.10 am here, I'll come back tomorrow. Hopefully somebody can help me.

WoW .. I have the same problem ..
I did updated the firmware yesterday but didnt tried the burner since ..
I also get the flashy green light ..
and sometimes it doesnt read the disc I put in it ..
but when I do a reset it does ..
I dont know, is there some firmware\drivers problem or .. is the burner itself screwed up ?
Im just scared that when I burn some DVD it will be unreadble .. so everytime I do a burn - I have to put the DVD right back and do a reset to see if it reads it :(

K, nobody reply's, but I'll still post. Maybe someone bumps into this and can help out.

I re-installed the software and also the two progs that I thought that weren't nessesary. *noob*
Incd and the other.. now my Benq (wich is a 1620, not a 1640) works fine with DVD-RW discs, but not with DVD-R's, those still cause the same problem. >_<

I just visited DW1640 Page and it says :
Environment Conditions Operating temperature: 5°C~50°C at humidity of 8~80% RH
Non-operating temperature: -40°C~60°C at humidity: 5%~95% RH

I dont know if its related because I was able to burn some DVDs and CDs but the only problem was with windows recognizin' them .. maybe its up to microsoft to release an update or something like that ..
also .. here my CPU Temp. is 57celcius at the moment .. and the case is 44celcius ..
if my fans are at their highest speed its CPU-52c and Case-40c

I dont know if its related .. just thought about it .. :(

I have a solution.. finally..

So I was able to burn DVD-RW's, now I figured out I also can burn DVD-R's WITH THE NERO SOFTWARE !
However, burning with the windows wizard is not possible for DVD-R's. And it still shows the disc as 0 kb available, but in Nero burning rom I can burn data on it and it plays normal too afterwards.

Another thing now is I wanna place my DVD player between the cd-rw and dvd-rw.
The cd rw and dvd rw are on secundairy master and secundairy slave. So the dvd player should be on primairy slave ( ? ), connected with the ide cable coming from the HDD. Is this right ? Cause when I do that, my system doesn't start up. "system boot failure" :/

Dude .. why so much drives ? DVD player and DVD+-RW and CD-RW ??
its too much ..
also the HDD should be PRIMARY MASTER ..
and also check the pins behind the drives .. make sure they are master\slave accordingly with the IDE connections ..

Too much ? This is 2005, ppl have more drives then the standard cd-rom.

Why I wanna have that sony dvd player between the cd-rw and dvd-rw ? Because I payed for it, it still works and I wanna use that one to watch dvd's with in order to spare my dvd-rw drive.

I have 6 drives in my system, 2 hard drives, 2 DVD Writers, 1 DVD ROM, and 1 CD Writer.
