The Plextor comes with Nero 6 OEM (pretty much Nero Express.  NeroVision Express...that's pretty much it).  That is why I purchased the OEM drive.  YES...it is the Benq 1640.  However, with firmware 1.01 from Plextor...it performs well.  I have burned at least 5 disks since yesterday...each and every one just under (5:45-5:50) or just above (slowest 16x burn was 6:10).  You get the dl speed of 8X on +R...good drive.  Very quiet and more reliable than my PX-716A, which is out for it's third replacement at the moment.  Seems that PowerRec might be a bust for Plextor...doesn't always work right...and causes more problems than it's worth.

If you have a good working knowledge of computers and hardware...go the OEM route.  I triple checked with Plextor tech support about this drive...it has the stardard 1 yr warrantee of the retail drives.  You even have the 1 year replacement guarantee of Newegg should you decide to go that route.

Bob

I also sent BenQ a note way back in June, asking them when the 1640 would be available in the USA.

They said at the end of JUNE.  I'm not sure, but I think they are running a little bit late!

The BenQ 1640 will be my first DVD Writer and I'm holding out for it!

Randy.

to the people located in US/Canada, the BenQ 1640 is available at NCIX.com (located here in Canada).  They are a very reputable store here in Canada and they have the 1640 onsale for 53cdn, 44US.  Just click on the sale banner on the main page.

they have a 9.08 lifetime average rating at resellerratings.com.

I sent another note to BenQ, asking when the 1640 would be available in the USA!  I can't believe their respose: They don't know when the 1640 will be released in the USA!

Their entire reply is below.

Dazed and Confused,
Randy.

From: prodinfo.us@BenQ.com
Dear Randy,

The DW1640 is actually not currently sold in the United States. We do
not currently have an official release date.

Thank you,

Qreseller Team
BenQ America Corp.

It appears to have gone up to $51 US - what's the URL of the sale link? Am I missing something?

Getting it from them is an intriguing possibility - even with the higher shipping to the US it's still cheaper than a Plextor 740...

my bad, if i link directly to the 1640, it doesnt apply the sale price.  Sale prices can only be viewed on the sale page.  on the main page, theres a sale banner at middle/top.

heres a link to the US sale page:

i got mine this morning, came with firmware BSGB, flashed it to BSJB right away.  It came to 68.46 CDN shipped via express (arrived next day =]).

heres a scan of a Taiyo Yuden TYG02 at 8x... pretty impressive if you ask me =].

It's has been trend that Acer/BenQ has a very strong presents in Asia/Europe.
Therefore I guess, Americans dying to get their hands on this model gotta wait for a little while longer

I ordered my 1640 early the 21st through NCIX with the faster shipping for less then 70 US. Then I saw the post about the $44 sale price for the black unit afterwards I have mailed them and we'll see if they go ahead and adjust my price even though I ordered a Beige drive. They are highly regarded Co. in Canada and abviously have no problem shipping to the US or taking US funds. I hope it works as well as my 1600/1620/1620pro has maybe it'll get here today, but probably monday.

if they havnt shipped it out yet, they should be able to change the price.  If you look at the sale page, both the black and beige drives are on sale...

beige=ugly imo =p, i ordered the black one, got it yesturday morning from NCIX and it came with BSGB made in China.

This will b my first DVD burner too. And I plan to backup my DVD collection.

Question: Is the Taiyo Yuden media the best think for it.
I remember seeing a scale of DVD media from best to wort for DVD drives in general.
