New product makes it easy to zip files attached to e-mail messages, and lets users encrypt attachments with AES. WinZip Computing has introduced WinZip Companion for Outlook, which is designed to make it easy for Outlook to zip and encrypt attachments to their outgoing e-mail messages.
The WinZip Companion can be configured to zip files automatically, to ask if the user wants them zipped, or to manually zip and attach files. Toolbar and menu items control the program's functionality on a message-by-message basis.
Sensitive attachments can also be protected by WinZip Companion using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption, using either the 128- and 256-bit encryption scheme. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) selected AES as the standard for both U.S. government and private data encryption. WinZip's implementation of AES encryption is FIPS-197 as certified by NIST
A fully functional evaluation version of WinZip Companion for Outlook is available from the WinZip web site at
www.winzip.com. If purchased, a single-user license costs $19, and volume licensing discounts are available, as is package pricing if the product is bought with the company's WinZip 9.0 product.
