If this is a Frequently Asked Question I apoligize.

A normal standalone dvd player can only read normal dvd files (mpeg wright?).

There are other compressing programs using avi and mkv files.
I'm a total newbie but I think mkv and such are better in compressing than mpeg.

Does this mean;
you can ripp a mpeg-dvd file to a mkv file,
burn it on a single layer dvdr,
and still avoid any loss of quality?

Offcourse you'll have to use a computer dvd player.

Don't mess up the formats...MKV (Matroska) is just a package that contains AVI, Audio and Subtitles, nothing to do with MPEG format
