T3TRISizer -> SanDisk To Launch MP3 Players, Aiming For 20% Of Market In 2005 ! (12/31/2004 9:09:05 AM)

SanDisk plans to add MP3 players to its product mix in 2005, with the goal of capturing 20% of the Taiwan market, according to the company’s Taiwan general sales agent Princeton Technology C&C.

SanDisk will take advantage of its global reputation and relatively low-cost flash-memory cards to enter the global market for MP3 players, Princeton Technology indicated. SanDisk will offer MP3 player models fitted with 256MB, 512MB or 1GB of flash memory in the Taiwan market in 2005, with a tentative retail price of below NT$4,000 (US$125) for the 512MB model, the Taiwan sales agent said.

The demand for MP3 players in Taiwan will grow from 400,000-500,000 units in 2004 to 800,000, including 60,000 based on hard disk drives (HDDs), in 2005, local market analysts predict. Based on these projections, SanDisk is confident it will sell 160,000 MP3 players in 2005.

In related news, Apple Computer’s 4GB HDD MP3-player model, the iPod mini, currently sells at below NT$9,000 (US$281) in Taiwan, while the iriver H10 has just been launched at a tentative retail price of NT$12,500 (US$391). The iriver model features a built-in 1-inch 5GB HDD and a 1.5-inch LCD screen and weighs in at 96.2 grams. The Taiwan sales agent for iriver hopes to sell 60,000 MP3 players (all models) in 2005, double the 30,000 sold in 2004.
