Drago -> Kiss DP-1000 vs Philips DVP720SA (9/10/2004 10:31:14 AM)

Hey all,

I'm going to buy one of those dvd-players in about a week. I've read several reviews and I think, that one of those two players should be the right one...

I'll use the player quite only for watching dvd's and mpeg-, divx- or xvid-films (audio streams are ac3 or mp3 [if possible cbr and vbr]).

Firstly I wanted to buy the Kiss DP-1000, but then I read something about freezing the device several times...

Hope, that something could answer me.

Thx in advance

The Kiss player supports also Xvid while Philips is not. On the other hand Philips can read SACD. The truth about the DP-1000 is that I noticed some freezes while MP3 playback. However this that I cannot confirm is that it would be possible the specific unit we get to be "tired", tested from many sites and magazines...[:)]
Thx for your fast response.

I heard, that the philips dvd-player does support xvid-playing - even though it isn't supported offically by Philips. Is this right?

The philips dvd-player is more sympathetic for me, because it has got a stronger chip and can play qpel movies. MP3 playback or the use of subtitles (which should be the downsides of philips) I doesn't use either.

Can you please explain me the last phrase including the word "tired" to me again, please...

Thanks 'til now guys... You're great. [:)]

Well... so I think, that it's the better decision to buy the Kiss player... Last question: Are there many films on the net, which have qpel enabled or it's a not so often used thingy?

first of all, Quarter Pixel flags (QPEL) can be used in both XviD and DivX encoded movies. If you use encoding profiles with DivX codec, and you select Home Theater profile, you will have QPEL disabled by default... This is done to ensure compatibility with stand-alone players... However, there is a wide range of movies that you download from the internet (with any sharing program or bit torrents) that will have QPEL flags, since QPEL offers better quality for PC Monitor viewing...

My experience tells me that most movies you get from these sharing programs are QPEL enabled... However, you can always check if you have QPEL or not:

Sigma Designs released a small utility to check qpel and gmc... but you can get it only if you have a REALmagic Xcard... However, i managed to get my hands on this file from SD... you can get it here: http://fer.peque.org/descargas/avicheck.zip
Load the avi file and look for S(GMC)-VOP and QuarterPixel usage... as simple as that...

if your avi files contain QPEL flags, you will get something like this:

Thanks for your suggestions and this nice utility!

I'm going to buy the Kiss DP-1000.

FYI Philips DVP 720 SA: I haven't being able to play a single DVD-R throughout, they usually stop after 30-40 minutes playback. Also, DVD+R DL are not recognize "No Disk" when I try to insert one. Saying that the DivX quality is excellent!!! I check my machine and I've have the latest revision / firmware, the DVD-Rs I'm talking about play perfectly on my two year old Philips 630... feedback welcome [:D]
