emperor -> BenQ to offer free upgrade 1600->1620 with 12X -R! (7/6/2004 10:16:38 PM)

Last minute info said that middle/end of July, BenQ will offer free firmware upgrade for DW1600A customers to upgrade to DW1620A model that would support, 16X DVD+R, 12X DVD-R and 2.4X DL, making it the fastest available DVD recorder for all formats! [:-][:D][8D]

I think this burner will be hot. With firmware-upgrade it does about everyting (except dvd-ram). According to your review it has very good writing quality and very good errorcorrection. (Now I really don't know which burner to buy!)

Hehe, we will wait to see how DW1620A would perform at the near future [;)]

If this thing works, it will dominate. The other companies will have to play catch up. When did Benq get into this role?

For sure BenQ is playing hard to dominate optical storage community, we will see how good the new firmware would be

BenQ had a poor reputation in CD burning. They're been opening eyes lately because they basically having Philips running the show for them. Philips does a lot of the design and the hard technical work, and BenQ churns out the drives. A LOT of the work is done by the chipset, and having Philips provide BenQ with their chipset is helping BenQ a lot. Whereas the current Taiwanese King, LiteOn, is using MediaTek's chip, which isn't as good. And their big-corporation buddy, Sony, is more interested in being a nasty bully than actually being helpful, unlike Philips.

Well BenQ maybe had a bad reputation their DVD recorders more solid but without unique features compared with the latest LiteON drives...We will see what the future holds for us, as users [8D]

Now if only they spent as much money on the drives as they did on the advertising. Benq's cd writers were never highly regarded. As the owner of one, I can tell you their mediocre reputation was deserved.

Now I have enough trouble finding dvd-r media at 8x, where is the 12x media coming from? Will this be a limited number of 8x discs supported as the Plextor 708 and 712 situation?

I wonder if it will be possible to upgrade a DW1600/1620 to a DW1630 (16x +r / 8x +rw / 4x +r9 dl) All these drives are based on the Philip's Nexperia PNX7860 chipset.
