tarfu -> verbatim 241040AL to liteon LTR-24102B (2/14/2002 2:24:35 PM)

I purchased a cendyne packaged cdrw. drive is identified on its sticker, and in BIOS/Windows as a verbatim 241040AL with firmware 58SA. I peeled off the sticker on the drive and (no surprise), it's really a liteon LTR-24102B.

So I want to upgrade the firmware to make the drive show up as a liteon in windows, and possibly take advantage of newer features/upgrades that come w/the new firmware. but the liteon firmware won't upgrade the drive as it doesn't recognize it as a liteon. I've tried placing a jumper in all the positions that i can on the back of the drive next to the digital audio (on the left side), but nothing works. the drive is still recognized as a verbatim. i've even tried booting into dos and running pflash and trying to load an older liteon .bin file, but no go.

Anyway, any suggestions/links/files anyone has would be greatly appreciated by more people than just me, i'm sure.

Some drives assume factory defaults if the eject button is held during power-up - no idea if it applies to these!

PS. I wouldn't try to chang id while it's still in warranty ... bye bye warranty!!

I have this same problem.

Anyone have any ideas on how to trick the verbatim into thinking its a lite-on (like it really is).

thanks,
gew

All you need to do is install the DOS firmware (5S07)for the Lite-on 24x burner. It will change the ID string to Lite-on and the fw to 5S07. Then you can upgrade your burner to any firmware that you want.

You have to download the DOS fw, place it on a DOS bootable floppy disk and run it from the disk. I hope that you are familiar with DOS.

If you cannot find a download site for the DOS fw, I can e-mail to you if you post your an e-mail address.

burner1000000,

I followed your instructions and it doesn't work. i'm using a win98 boot disk to get to a dos prompt. i tell the software to load the firmware, and i get something that looks like:

primary ide0: no cdrw found
primary ide1: no cdrw found
secondary ide0: no cdrw found
secondary ide1: no cdrw found

and then i get kicked back to the a: prompt. do i need to jumper any of the jumpers at the back left of the drive? the drive is on my udma 33 controller (asus cubx mobo) because the drive wasn't recognized in my bios or windows when i plugged it into the regular ide controller.

any other ideas?

thanks!

any new info out there?

thanks!

burner1000000 -> RE: verbatim 241040AL to liteon LTR-24102B (3/5/2002 10:46:13 PM)

because the program is DOS based, it will only recognize the primary and secondary IDE chains. You must hook the drive up to one of them. Hopefully, the BIOS will recognize the drive. That's sounds kind of strange that it won't find it.

If that fails, put it into a friend's machine and flash. You've got the right idea only a small technical problem remains.

burner1000000 you are the bomb!

I plugged the drive into my regular IDE controller and THEN ENABLED IT IN MY BIOS. I'm such a fool. Anyway, I'm now running the latest firmware (5S57) from liteon's site.

Thanks again for all your help. I don't know how you figured out how to do this, but I'm really appreciative. I'm now off to link this forum to all the other forum's I've been to regarding this problem.

Again, great job!

Hey guys, can you send me the DOS fw downgrade program? The link posted above does not work anymore. Thanks!

BTW, I bought a Lite On 24102B. When installed under w2k sp2 OS, it was recognized as 24102M instead. I am trying to get it back to 24102B. Should this program do the trick or what else should I do?

ACDC -> RE: verbatim 241040AL to liteon LTR-24102B (3/19/2002 5:44:03 PM)

Now, is there a way to do that with my Sanyo CRD-1500BP rebadged as QPS CRD-1500BP? I'm tired of softwares rejecting the drive even though software official supports it just because it says "QPS" instead of Sanyo in it's firmware string.

OneEyeBandit -> RE: verbatim 241040AL to liteon LTR-24102B (4/9/2002 12:04:51 PM)

I have a verbatim 32x12x40x which appears to be a rebadged Liteon - is there a way to update my firmware so that it will be seen as a Liteon drive?

Thanks
