I have spent a few hours on this Forum trying to troubleshoot to no avail! I have a Compaq Presario 2500 Pentium 4 1.6GHz with Windows XP Pro SP2. I bought this Laptop from a friend and I am fixing it and trying to get it to run smoothly. The DVD/CD drive will read DVD's but will not read CD's. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drive but no success and tried cleaning it. Any help?

Go into device manager and delete the IDE channel that it is installed on.  Now, reboot and let windows reinstall the drive.

I deleted the Secondary IDE Channel. Windows reinstalled the device and it still doesn't work. I would think that if DVD's work then the device is reading properly. Any suggestions?

Check the system for a root kit.  May be preventing CD playback.  I have a relatively low expectation out of laptop optical drives.
