joejalbert -> Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A Drive can't burn or read blank dvds (3/5/2007 10:29:52 PM)

I successfully installed my Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A Drive and it works fine. It can burn CDs and I can watch DVDs. But I have one BIG problem. It can't burn DVDs. When the drive is empty it says DVD RAM Drive (D:) but when I insert a blank DVD disc it changes to CD Drive (D:). Since it can't recognize blank DVDs it can't burn DVDs. I did everything. I set both CD RW and DVD RW drive jumpers to cable select and boot to Bios to turn on the drive. When I went to the bios, the CD RW (secondary slave) said CD-ROM but my DVD RAM (primary master) said CD-ROM too . This is a new drive and the problem is really annoying me[:@]. Really need help.

Have you actually tried to burn a disc?  I have an LG GSA-H22N (DVD-RAM) drive and it does the same thing in Windows Explorer, but I can still burn a disc with Nero, CDRWIN, ImgBurn, etc.  No problems here.  Windows does not look at atip information to determine the media type in the drive... at least it never has for me....

Hi, I am having a similar problem as Joe has, that is I just bought the same model dvd drive (Optiarc 7170A) put it in my computer and now I cannot burn dvd's in nero.  I was using a samsung ts-h552b that has been making way to many cup coasters lately so I switched.  The problem is also that I put the samsung back into my computer and now the samsung is not registering or burning blank media.  I can watch a dvd though. Any help will be well appreciated, thanks.

I have same drive and got similar problems like yours. Tried everything and finally find a solution to my problem. Don't know if this will help you but you can try.
First, updated drive with liggy&dee 1.O3 firmware (http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-7170A/). Then, installed Nero 7.7.5.1. Now it works perfectly, reading and writing any dvd. [:D]
