emperor -> First DVD-R DL burning test results... (3/17/2005 6:41:39 PM)

We got some DVD-R DL media from a good "friend" and since Plextor PX-716A supports them, we tried to burn one disc. First of all lets see how the blank disc is recognized

We used the latest version of CopyToDVD that supports DVD-R DL with our usual DL burning project (Gladiator PAL Edition)
[image]local://upfiles/16874/660E42D283854A918001AF997FECF58A.png[/image]

, the burning process lasted around 57mins ~ 2X burning speed.

As currently stands, the DVD-R DL format is not 100% supported from the drives, since multisesion and layer jump features aren't present at either Plextor PX-716A or any other drive, at least with current firmware...

The burned disc as recognized from DVDInfoPro and Plextools

[image]local://upfiles/16874/1FC903A9FF0D460D87506CDE1BDFF906.png[/image]

DVDInfoPro 3.53 has a bug and reports that the disc has DVD-ROM booktype, NicW already knows this issue and will be fixed with an upcoming DVDInfoPro version.

If you are wondering how a NEC 3500A could recognize a burned DVD-R DL media then...as a blank DVD-R!

:-D. Great work Empy! As you know -R DL should detect as booktype == DVD-R when written. I will try to get a disc to Nic to deal with this.

Hopefully we could test the Pioneer DVR-109 and NEC 3520A DVD-R DL writing capabilities soon...

Then how good is the burning if the burned disk is seen as a blank, whether plus or dash?

emperor -> RE: First DVD-R DL burning test results... (3/18/2005 6:55:38 AM)

well the point was to show that most current dvd recorders have problems recognize dvd-r dl media, probably manufacturers need to update the firmware...

I don't mean to be sarcastic, but isn't it supposed to be compatible with exisitng equipment right off the bat? The dual-layer plus is.

emperor -> RE: First DVD-R DL burning test results... (3/18/2005 3:02:03 PM)

Actually not, most new DVD formats like DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL need some firmware tuning to support them

MP3Mogul -> RE: First DVD-R DL burning test results... (3/18/2005 3:33:25 PM)

Emperor,

How about running that disk through a few "quality" tests I'd like to see how the quality of the burn is???

Do DVD-ROM's like the LiteOn SOHD-167T and even the older Toshiba SD-M1712 recognize the DVD-R DL disc?

emperor -> RE: First DVD-R DL burning test results... (3/19/2005 8:57:43 AM)

Today, IOData released a firmware that supports DVD-R DL format for the NEC ND-3520A drives...We tried the firmware and burned a DVD-R DL disc with ND-3520A @ 4X!

First lets see the upgrade process

[image]local://upfiles/16874/EE93C52FC509476E99CFE01D758AA846.png[/image]
Our drive transformed to a NEC ND-3520AW (different name to state the DVD-R DL writing capabilities?)

The ND-3520AW supports MKM DVD-R DL at 2X and 4X CLV

Time has come to burn our usual DL project, the Gladiator PAL Edition, with the latest CopyToDVD version...The drive made noise during the lead-in burning process
[image]local://upfiles/16874/395E060674A74CAE93C81D2B860BEECA.png[/image]

and project finished after 27:28mins!

Some information about the burned disc from DVDInfoPro

and Nero CD-DVD Speed!

We have two burned DVD-R DL discs...How is the compatibility?

- Plextor PX-716A, firmware v1.04u, even the drive supposed to read and write them, cannot recognize the burned discs, maybe this will improved at 1.05?
- NEC ND-3520A, firmware 3.22, the drive can read them without any issues
- NEC ND-3500A, firmware 2.R8, the drive recognizes them as blank DVD-R media (ouch!)
- Stand Alone Player: NeuNeo HVD108 DVD Player , the player cannot recognize them...ejects them

Keep in mind that all current drives are NOT supporting 100% the DVD-R DL specs (layer jump and multisession)...The Pioneer DVR-109 tests with 1.40 firmware are coming, stay tuned!

To answer Mp3mogul question, we cannot really scan the media, since the Plextor drive cannot read them and the NEC 3520A doesn't offer PI/PIF scanning features...

I've send you an e-mail!

semo -> RE: First DVD-R DL burning test results... (3/20/2005 2:45:20 PM)

hope dl media becomes more common or blueray-r are really cheap when launched

*a pig flies over*

emperor -> RE: First DVD-R DL burning test results... (3/21/2005 3:53:26 PM)

v1.40 of Pioneer DVR-109 worked perfectly @ 6X, more details at an upcoming article...!
